This research studies the life and literature of Moomyoungja(無名子) Yoon-ki(윤기, 1741-1826) who lived from the mid-18th to the beginning of the 19th century, and illuminates his consciousness. That's why this thesis was named "The Thought and Literature." It means that there has been no previous study on Moomyoungja(無名子), so this thesis will consider both his life and consciousness as a basic procedure to examine into his literature.
The history of literature in 18th through 19th century was studied concentrating on those who belong to Yun-am(燕巖)or Sung-ho(星湖) parties, and the realists, like Da-san(茶山), who were successors to the parties above. And the partial color was mainly based on Si-party's(時派) people. Yoon-ki(윤기) was a Keun-ki-nam-in(近畿南人, a person who lived near Seoul and belonged to Nam-party), but he had social intercourse with many Pyuk-party's(僻波) people in terms of political view. They seem to have formed one of the important literary groups of the age.
Also the life of Moomyoungja(無名子) shows that he was a true man who kept his consciousness as a candid reader, and his literary accomplishment was better than the realits' ones. Therefore, the purpose of the research is to help make the aspects of the history of literature in 18th through 19th century more flourishing and complete.
In terms of life and social intercourse, he lived keeping his self-respect and conscience. He associated with people who was being content amid poverty and taking pleasure in acting in an honest way.
Moomyoungja(無名子) always regarded himself as a writer and historian. His consciousness as a historian was reflected in various forms like poems, miscellaneous writing, idle talks, etc.
Moomyoungja(無名子) consciousness reflects his civilized one in his view of superstition and filial duty compared to the view of people of the age. He was free from Poong-soo(風水說, the divination by configuration of the ground) because he thought the life's diligence was more important that the location of the grave. Moomyoungja(無名子) World view through his whole life was based on so-called "the pursuit of truth." He pursued the truth with calm reason, neither emotional revelation of anger nor simple criticism only for criticism. We can still feel that we should learn his spirit that he lamented there was no open declaration and pursued the truth with calm reason.
His theory of literature took in Secrets of Nature Theory(天機論) in fashion of the age, sublated imitation, and pursued characteristic and simple expression. And his critical view insists that one should criticize that writing itself except the writing's external elements, and in testing the writing one should test it with the person.(自人言文章)
Next, the theory of literature is showed in his real literature as following;
First, expressing reality of the age vividly. Second, expressing his poor position satirically. Third, suggesting today's paragon through historic poetry.(詠史詩) So his literary phase is as much as the realist's one is worth.
