With regard to the Climate changes due to Global warming effect, the vulnerability assessment due to sea level rise has been presented in this study for parts of Korean coast.
In this study the vulnerability evaluation has been performed only for two administrative districts, Kyeonggi-do and Chungcheongnam-do, in the western side of Korean peninsula including more than half parts of west coast of Korea. For the scenarios of Sea Level Rise for vulnerability assessment, the result of sea surface height from numerical study of CSM 1.2 (Choi, 2000) and extreme sea level from wave-tide-surge coupled model application (Eum, 2000) were considered. It is assumed that the density of population in the study area is uniform, for the difficulty of data acquisition for distribution of population. And the population growth rate was taken from the data provided by Korea National Statistical Office for the estimation of possible damaged population in the future. The possible inundated area from the study will be 0.92 percent and 1.7 percent of the gross area of Kyeonggi-do and Chuncheongnam-do respectively and the possible damaged population in the inundated area will be 1.2 percent and 1.43 percent of the gross population of each district respectively due to the accelerated sea level rise by global warming. It is not absolute fact about the effect of sea level rise due to global warming because of uncertainties of various factors and lack of relevant data but useful information for the possible disaster and adaptation method to cope with the disasters.
