The purpose of this study is to find out the effect of reading informational books on young children's critical thinking and problem solving. For this purpose, the reading program using informational books was developed.
The research questions were following:
1. Are there any differences in young children's ability of critical thinking between experimental group and control group?
2. Are there any differences in young children's ability of problem solving between experimental group and control group?
3. What's the relationship between the critical thinking and the problem solving?
The subjects were two classes composed of 44, 5 and 6 year old kindergarteners. The experimental group involved in 8 times of reading program using informational books for 4 weeks. For the control group with 22 young children, the reading program using informational books was not conducted. The research used the pre-test and post-test. The collected data were analyzed by t test and linear regression using SPSS 10.0 program.
The results of this study were as following:
First, there was a statistical significant difference between experimental group and control group in young children's critical thinking.
Second, there was statistical significant difference between the experimental group and control group in young children's problem solving.
Third, there was statistical significant correlation between critical thinking and problem solving in control group and experimental group. Especially, the critical thinking effected on problem solving statistically. That effect was more significant in experimental group than in control group.
