The purpose of this study was to investigate and analyze the current selection status of recommended book listings in mainly South Korea and the characteristics of the books for young children.
The research was proceeded a stepwise manner through two main questions and their sub-categorized questions as following.
    1. How is the current selection status of recommended book listings?
First, how is the listing production status?
Second, how are the listings circulated and for whom?
Third, how are the listings organized?
Fourth, what are the contents of the listings?
Fifth, how are the listings selected?
    2. What are the characteristics of the recommended books?
First, what are the bibliographic characteristics of the books?
Second, what are the physical characteristics of the books?
Third, what are the literary characteristics of the books?
Fourth, what are the aesthetic characteristics of the books?
Amongst two main parts of the questions, the subjects for the first one of research which were 15 institutions or organizations which published or announced recommended book listings were interviewed. The results from the interviews were analyzed according to different categories for specific purpose.
For the second part of the research, the subjects were 302 picture books for young children have recommended by more than two institutions or organizations of the first part of research for year 2002 and 2003. A list of criteria based on a theoretical method considered important by children's literature authorities was used to analyze the books. The books were also sorted by the frequency or percentage for specific purpose.
The results and the answers for the above questions for research part one are listed as following.
First, recommended book listings were found to be produced from a various fields of institutions and organizations including schools, publishers, government, bookstores, book rental company, private organizations, and the press. The listings have started to be released or produced since 1968. Specifically, in recent years, the interest for the recommended books have increased significantly and their production as well. The release period of the recommended book listings were varied, however; once a year was the majority case, making 56.25%.
Second, the recommended book listings for young children are small portion relatively comparing to them elementary school students. The distribution media of the recommended book listings were varied including physical paper production and internet web sites. Periodic booklet-wise independent volumes were most frequently used. Amount of circulation production volumes were ranged from 1,000 to 60,000. <Hanuri Reading Campaign Center> and <Children's Book Study Organization> were the top two listing release institutions in terms of the volume quantity.
Third, the recommended book listings were found to be organized mainly according to age and literary genre and field, however; details of the organizations were radically different according as each institutions or organizations.
Fourth, most of the book listings have contained titles, authors and publishers of the books in common. But book reviews, book selection policies and name of selectors were a few of those items not indicated consistently throughout the listings. Even for the listings having book reviews, most of them were consisted of only two to four sentences of story summaries and even less or none brief comments on critics or analytical reviews.
Lastly, the book listing selections were found to be critically more focused on the newly released books. The quantities of selected book items were varied from four to 400 items of books a year. Selectors of the listings were mainly by a single professional or expert in different area from external of the institution instead of the organized selection committees from internal. In the most cases, specific book selection policies did not even seem to exist, and tended to be vague and not clear. Methods for the book listing selection were tending to be different according to the types of selectors.
The results and the answers for the above questions for research part two are listed as following.
First, most of recommended books for young children showed consistency containing titles, names of writers, and illustrators, however; many books did not indicate the translators in case of Korean language translated foreign books. John Burningham was the most frequently found author from the recommended book listings. For illustrators, Hayasi Akiko was the one in the listings. Books published by four major publishers were about the half of the quantity of the whole. Books published after year 2000, in terms of first edition year, were the majority from the listings. Korean picture books were the top of the nationality criteria. 23.84% of the listings were the awarded books. The types of the awards were mainly by international more than Korean awards.
Second, physical characteristics of the books were analyzed. Rectangular shape was found to be the majority form of the books. Most used pages of the books were 31 to 33. Most of recommended books for young children used Myungjo-Korean font for their printings as is customary for textbooks-but the size of the characters varied greatly.
Third, the genre of recommended books most often selected for young children was fantasy. As the protagonist, men were more popular choice than women, and children more than adults, and humans more than animals. The plot of the books was tending to be linear. The conflicts amongst characters were mostly 'self against others', in which the struggle was between main character and another. Many of the books dealt with general life stories and characters' internal states of mind for their themes. The societal settings were more frequent choice more than natural environment. They were also mostly the omniscient point of view.
Fourth, the aesthetic characteristics of recommended books for young children were analyzed into colors, materials, styles of the art of the books. Colored books were dominant. Many of the books used water-color and acrylic painting materials. Expressionism was most used form of the arts found from the books. It seemed to be the frequent form because of the reason that the books expressing authors' ideas symbolically through the means of exaggeration or distortion of the images were understood to be more artistic and effective to children.
