The purpose of this study was to investigate the adolescents' perception of marital conflict and adolescents' offensive character.
The research questions were as follows:
1. Is there any significant difference in the adolescents' perception of marital conflict during commuting as a function of demographic variables (adolescent's gender, adolescent's order of birth, the conditions of domestic economy, parent's age, parent's occupation, parent's education, parent's drinking)?
2. Is there any significant difference in adolescents' offensive character during commuting as a function of demographic variables(adolescent's gender, adolescent's order of birth, the conditions of domestic economy, parent's age, parent's occupation, parent's education, parent's drinking)?
3. Is there any relationship between adolescents' perception of marital conflict and adolescents' offensive character?
The subjects of this study were three hundred and forty respondents who participate in the study are middle school students in the second grade and they are chosen at the five schools in Seoul. Adolescents' perception of marital conflict was assessed by The Adolescents' Perception of Interparental Conflict Scale developed by Grych and his colleagues(1992). Adolescents' offensive character was assessed by Buss-Durkee Hostility Inventory by Buss and Durkee(1957).
For data analyses, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Scheffe´ Test for pairwise comparison, Pearson's Correlation were used. In testing all hypotheses, .05 was used as a significant level in this study.
The major findings of this study were as follows:
1. A significant difference was in the adolescents' perception of marital conflict in accordance with the conditions of domestic economy and parent's drinking capacity among backgrounds of the adolescents' social demography. The survey is shown that the lower the conditions of domestic economy is, the higher the frequency, strength, settlement, efficiency of counterplan and the whole marital conflict is. And it is shown that the more a father has drinking capacity, the higher the frequency and the perception of the whole marital conflict is, while the more a mother has drinking capacity, the higher the settlements, contents, a love triangle and perception of the whole marital conflict is. And a boy student has higher perception to a self-criticism in a marital conflict than a girl student, and then, a single in the birth order has higher perception in the strength of marital conflict than the first child. while the first child has higher perception in the efficiency of counterplan than the single child, however, no significant difference was in the adolescents' perception of marital conflict in accordance with mother's job, the conditions of mother's job and parent's education.
2. A significant difference was in the adolescents' offensive character in accordance with the conditions of domestic economy among backgrounds of the adolescents' social demography. It is shown that the worse the conditions of domestic economy is, the higher an indirect offensive character and excitability is. And also, It is shown that the girl students are higher in an indirect offensive character than the boy students and a significant difference was between a mother's education and adolescents' indirect offensive character, and it is shown that the more drinking capacity a mother has, the higher the indirect offensive character is. But, no significant difference was due to order of birth, parent's job, condition of mother's job, father's education and drinking capacity in a adolescents' offensive character.
3. A significant interrelationship was between the adolescents' perception of marital conflict and a adolescents' offensive character, that is, the whole marital conflict which the adolescent perceived showed a high interrelationship with order of adolescents' excitability, whole offensive character, and indirect offensive character. The more perception which frequency and strength of marital conflict is high and the marital conflict is not settled peacefully they have, it is the higher in the whole of offensive character, and indirect offensive character and excitability. The higher perception that the content of marital conflict was relative to theirselves with perception of a high fear without an efficient counterplan in a condition of marital conflict their children have, it is the higher in the whole of offensive character, violence and indirect offensive character and excitability. Also, it is shown the higher an indirect offensive character and excitability is that the more perception which the cause of marital conflict is due to themselves. Lastly, the higher the adolescent perceived a love triangle between parents of marital conflict is. it is the higher in the whole of offensive character, violence and indirect offensive character and excitability.
