This study intends to apply horticultural therapy as a program to improve adolescent's self-esteem and ego-identity to the regular and the slightly delinquent student in the middle school, on the basis of understanding problem to be experienced in adolescence with regard to envelopment of ego.
The horticultural activity program of this study is planned by the following items.
1. It offers experience of bringing up through the activity of cultivating a plant.
2. It focuses on achievement experience in the activities of cultivating and utilizing a plant and close schoolmate relationship in peer support and group activity.
The subjects of this study were composed of two separate groups. One is the regular student and another is the delinquent student. Every group member is 10. The horticultural program had been carried at S middle school located in Seoul for six months ;19 times once a week for 1 hour at a times for the horticultural programs.
For this study, Self-Esteem Scale test by Rosenberg(1965) and Ego-Identity Scale by Digran(1965). Statistical methods applied to this study were Paired Samples t-test through SPSS. To investigate differences of the ego identity and self-esteem had been assessed two times before and after horticultural program.
The results of this study are as follows.
In case of the regular student, there aren't significant difference in self-esteem test. In ego identity test, there are some significant difference in the 1 field(goal-directedness) of the ego identity which is consist of 6 fields(p<.05)
In case of the slightly delinquent student, there aren't significant difference in self-esteem test. In ego identity test, there are some significant difference in the 1 field(uniqueness) of the ego identity which is consist of 6 fields(p<.05)
Regarding this weak variation, there's consideration from various angles.
1. the limitation in a course of the development
2. the limitation of the scale
3. the point in a course of making up a question
4. the insufficiency of each other's feedback
In addition to this point, there's consideration by means of a sense of bring up, a process course and the analysis of the individual case.
1. the consideration through a sense of bring up
The shortage of successful growing experience is connected with low sense of a bring up, which have an influence on the slight variation of self-esteem and ego-identity.
2. the consideration through a process course
With inexperienced progression of the conductor and absence of the volunteer, the subject's attitude is connected with the result. The subject is attended to a result than a activity itself in the program hours, which disturbs the subject in taking pleasure in activity.
3. the consideration through the analysis of the individual case.
This study had limitation of dealing with psychological change owing to insufficient understanding and the approach of subject and subject's environment.
Therefore, the following items being taken into consideration, horticultural therapy will offer effective horticultural activity to adolescent.
1. the difficulties in growing a plant
It is helpful to set up a place for growing a plant within school bounds and cultivate a plant in cooperation. Also, it is led to successful experience to be taken care of by the teacher experienced in growing a plant and expert.
2. low preference to the activity of cultivating a plant
It is necessary to develope growing program added to decoration and utilization than the program keeping the characteristic of a just cultivating activity.
3. the attitude that is attended to a result.
It is necessary to have a conversation, to understand that waiting is required for growing a plant and growing a plant is always not able to be estimated by a valuation basis of success and failure. And it is useful in reducing the burden about a result to compose same program repeatedly as employing a material variously.
4. the necessity of the combined approach
It is helpful to appreciate psychological change about the subject concretely through the connection with a social worker and a counselor.
