The purpose of the present study was 1) to examine the maladaptive types of children in child welfare facilities and 2) to relate their maladaptive types with pychosocial environment in child welfare institutes. Therefore it is expected to provide an understanding for the children in the facilities as well as solutions to improve the status. Data were collected by survey studies on the 210 children in the child welfare facilities of the Daegu city who attend elementary schools (n=82), middle schools (n=66) or high schools (n=62). The results were as follows:
1. The mean age of the children staying at the child welfare facilities was 14 years old. In the majority of the children, their parents are still living (both father and mother or one side), however any contact and communication between parents and children are no longer present.
2. Generally they were satisfied with school life and replied that they were treated equally without any prejudice by other students. However they thought that they were not good enough at the examinations indicating that they have problems in the examinations with poor scores. This appears to make these children to feel an inferiority complex.
3. In particular, children who belong to the wpper grade levels in elementary school strongly felt that they were treated differently in a negative way in school because of their background as well as poor scores in the examination.
4. Generally they were satisfied with the environment of their child welfare facilities. They are dependent on the social workers and directors working in the facilities. However, 20% of the children replied that they should solve their problems by themselves without getting any help from others. In particular, a group that belong to the middle school age replied with a high frequency that they did not have anyone to rely on.
5. Most of them had a sponsor for supporting them and had a positive attitude to wards social workers. However 25% of children had a negative view for the community, and 39.9% felt that the community views them negatively as well.
In conclusion, it has been and observed that children in child welfare facilities are not different in behavior emotion as compared with others in the same age group. However, they easily feel treated differently in a worse way also, some of them feel that they do not preform well enough in the examination.
Therefore, it is needed to keep warm interests and supports on these children in the child welfare facilities. At last, there is a need for professional counselors and charity group ready for extra financial support. Also 24 hours dedicated nurses count when it comes to consultation and education. Reality of those children came much clearer after studying through specific project and social welfare solutions for children.
