The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among optimism, stress coping styles and university student's depression and life satisfaction. Another purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of sub-factors of optimism and stress coping styles on depression and life satisfaction.
The subjects were 497 university students in Dae-Gu and Kyung-Book area. The measures were Attribution Style Questionnaire, Stress Coping Styles Test, The Center for Epidemiological Studies Depression scale, Satisfaction with Life Scale.
The result of this study is summarized as follows.
First, optimism has the effect on the university student's depression. And, among the sub-factor of optimism, the factors of PmB(Permanent explanatory style about bad event), PsG(External explanatory style about good event), PmG(Temporary explanatory style about good event), PvG(Pervasiveness explanatory style about good event) do have the effect on the university student's depression.
Second, in the stressful situation, stress coping styles have the effect on the university student's depression. And active coping was negatively associated with their depression. Especially, among the sub-factor of stress coping styles, emotion-focused coping was the most reliable predictor of depression.
Third, optimism does not have the significant effect on the university student's life satisfaction. However, among the sub-factor of optimism, the factors of PsG(Personalization explanatory style about good event), PvG(Specification explanatory style about good event) do have the effect on their life satisfaction.
Finally, in the stressful situation, stress coping styles have the effect on life satisfaction, and active coping was positively associated with their life satisfaction, however, passive coping have no significant relation with their life satisfaction. Especially, among the sub-factor of stress coping styles, problem-focused coping was the most reliable predictor of the university student's life satisfaction.
