The mental disorder relapses by several factors, such as not taking medicine regularly, getting stressed in living, taking liquor or drugs and so on.
The mental disorder is susceptible to stress, and therefore its symptoms are getting worse under the state of serious stress and it comes to relapse, and even if it does not happen entirely due to stress, it relapses well once someone falls sick and gets stressed.
Recently, the importance of self-help group has been increasingly emphasized as the important resources in order to facilitate these mentally disordered persons' return to society. It's because the self-help group or mutual assistance group not only makes the mentally disordered persons experience giving and taking help and thereby make them think positively about themselves, but also through this experience, their pride and self-maturity ability is enhanced and they regularly build social support networks, and those become the basis that they can socially act to assert their rights.
Like this, notwithstanding the necessity of self-help group, it is our actual situation that except AA, currently only 10 places such as 3 facilities helping return to society, 6 mental health centers and 1 private clinic are running the self-help group in our country, among 22 facilities in Seoul helping return to society, 36 general hospitals, 7 mental hospitals, 145 private clinics('98 Ministry of Public Health & Welfare) and 7 mental health centers('01 The Association of Facilities helping return to society).
Therefore, this study had the objective to present the self-help group activation plan, which is one of the social support networks that can provide post-management and social support system together, by comparatively studying what difference they show, that is, the cause of stress , effect and coping type, depending on the mentally disordered persons' general matters and whether or not to participate in self-help group, in regard with stress, which is one of the factors that cause to obstruct the mentally disordered persons' readaptation to society.
To accomplish the above purpose, it researched and analyzed using the structured questionnaire, centered on the mentally disordered persons in 4 mental health centers in Seoul, in which currently the self-help group is most actively being operated.
In summary, the participation in self-help group of the mentally disordered persons showed significant difference only in positive coping type, among stress cause, effect by stress and stress coping type.
First, this means, like Bernard's study saying that generally every people are exposed to stress, the mentally disordered persons cannot avoid the stress by external stimulation and the stress from their psychological aspect, either.
Second, the fact that there is no significant difference in the effect by stress can be interpreted as the one based on the theory in Jin Young Suk's "Mental Medicine Social Works" (1998), which says that in case of physical effect, it is not largely affected by the concerned person's will or external stimulus since it is the biological response, and in case of affective effect, the affective response to stress can appear in a variety of ways, thereby they cannot properly control themselves.
Third, the fact, that whether or not to participate in self-help group showed significant difference only in positive coping type among 4 coping types (negative, short term, positive, inner conflict types), can be regarded as, that it is the positive effect of the homogeneous group that tries to enhance pride and human relationship technique, voluntarily participate in and strive for reaching common goal, and this can be regarded as motive power by which they cope with stress more positively than those mentally disordered persons who don't join the self-help group, and also it may not be too much to say that this is the effect of self-help group.
Based on this study results, it intends to seek the plan to activate self-help group.
First, we may need to grasp the reason why the self-help group is hard to be formed, and thereby the effective self-help group needs to be increased numerically and the mental health professionals need to make efforts to establish models.
Second, as the information related to self-help group is officially channeled, the routes for mentally disordered persons to be able to easily approach need to be secured.
Third, we may have to implement the effective self-help group suitable for our domestic situations, by improving the professionals' recognition on self-help group and developing training courses.
Fourth, even if it may be very difficult for mental health professionals to practically intervene due to the matters of professional man power and budget, when we make it a premise that to minimize or solve these problems may be the mental health professionals' duties, we may have to realize the mentally disordered persons' primary goal, that is, readaptation to society, by actively making the differentiated approach depending on the mentally disordered per sons' problems and situations.
