This study is to verify the subject, which is the degree of self-differentiation and depression, through family system theory. (Family system theory understands the family in a viewpoint that a family is a system.) Based on the thought that the types of family system which are attended by family cohesion and adaptation arerelated to individual's psychological problems.
Therefore this study examines into the relationship between family system and single adults' self-differentiation and depression.
This study made a survey of 230 university students and 120 workers by random sampling. The students are of who attend to universities located 2 at seoul and 3 at different locality. The workers are of who take residence in seoul. 350 questionnaires were given and 314 were received. Among those 28 were excluded by perfidious answers, so 286 were the last subject to analyze.
The instruments of this study was the recomposed FACES Ⅱ,Ⅲ,Ⅳ by Kim Su-yeon(1998), to measure the degree of family system. The self-differentiation measurement which was developed by Je Suk-bong (1989) was used to measure the degree of self-differentiation. CES-D(The Center for Epidemiological Studies - Depression Scale) recomposed by Jo Mang-Jae, Kim Gea-hee(1993) was used to measure the degree of depression.
The collected data were analyzed by SPSS 10.0 for windows. To analyze the accuracy of each instrument that were used to measure and to calculate frequency, percentage, average, and standard deviation T-Test and One-Way ANOVA were in operation. To compare with each groups sheffe´ post test was done. Also to know the correlation between self-differentiation and depression, pearson correlation coefficient was calculated.
The results through the analysis on the data are as followings
First the degree on self-differentiation, which is based on the family system type, cohesion, adaptation are shown as follow. According to family cohesion, connected family which has the proper degree in family cohesion has the highest self-differentiation degree. Enmeshed family and disengaged family come after in order. On family adaptation, flexible family which have the proper degree in family adaptation has the highest degree in self-differentiation. Rigid family and chaotic family both have no difference in group but have lower self-differentiation degree than flexible family.
Based on the family system type, balanced family has the highest self-differentiation degree and mid-ranged family and extremed family has no difference in between but are low in self-differentiation degree compared to balanced family.
Second the degree on depression by family cohesion and adaptation are as follow.
In family cohesion, disengaged family which has the extreme level in family cohesion has a depression degree higher than the connected family which has the proper cohesion. With the other groups there is no differences in between.
In family adaptation, flexible family which has the proper family adaptation has the lowest depression degree. Between chaotic and rigid family there is no differences and they have a higher degree in depression than the flexible family.
In family system types, balanced family who has the proper cohesion and adaptation degree has the lowest depression degree. Extremed family and mid-ranged family have no differences in between and have a higher degree in depression than balanced family.
Third the result on analyzing the correlation on self-differentiation and depression, between self-differentiation and depression there was a negative correlation r=-0.434.
Thus, it is shown that family that are properly joined with family cohesion and adaptation, flexible family and balanced family have a higher degree on self-differentiation than extremed family and have a lower degree on depression. And self-differentiation and depression have a negative correlation.
These results can effectively assist on the situation dealing this the client's psychological problems, concerning the power of influence of family system. It could also contribute to develope substantial programs and to its practical use.
