The purpose of this study is to investigate the syntactic and the semantic properties of Korean causal connective endings and to clarify the system of them. First, this study clarifies the relation-meaning of causal connective endings. The meaning of them does not indicate the causality as the objective reality. The causality in language does not indicate the causality in the real world, but what the speaker or language people recognize as causality. Therefore this study sublates an ontological approach and makes an epistemological approach in analyzing the meaning of causal connective endings. The causalities which they express are the causality in the real world, the causality in the speaker's conscious world, and the causality in the circumstances where the speaker speaks.
Second, this study makes the inner structure of causal connective endings clear by classifying them systematically. These endings can be classified in two aspects.
1. These endings can be classified by the meaning pattern which they can express, into two groups, One group comprises '-nikka' and '-meuro' 'which can express all patterns of meaning relations. And the other group comprises '-kie’, ‘-killae’, ‘-kiro’, ‘-ese’, ‘-neurago’, and '-tako‘ which can express only single pattern of meaning relation.
2. These endings can be classified by temporal interpretation into two groups. One group is composed of '-ese‘, ’-neurako‘ and ’-tako‘ which can be interpreted by only the relative tense. And the other group is composed of '-nikka’, ‘-meuro’, ‘-kie’, ‘-killae’ and '-kiro‘ which can be interpreted by both the relative and the absolute tense.
Third, this study examines the syntactic and the semantic properties of individual causal connective ending closely by investigating it minutely. The causal connective endings differ from each other in the character of causality which they can express, and each of them has a peculiar meaning of its. There exists a system among these endings which can be used in the same domain, and they are chosen in order to be used by the speaker or language people according to the syntactic and the semantic differences of them.
