This study examines the consequences of repeat purchasing (maintaining the status quo) versus switching in the context of information regarding the reason for the decision (e.g., prior-experience, brand typicality), and I argue that there are situations in which repeat purchasing may cause as much or even more regret than switching. Especially, product experience can often be ambiguous, and the same ambiguous experience is asymmetrically interpreted by brand typicality. Therefore, this study finds that ambiguous experience moderates the formation of regret.
The results were; first, the status quo effect reverse in the negative-prior-experience condition, leading to switching being regretted less than repeating.
Second, a high typicality brand led to lower regret in the repeat condition than in the switch condition. In contrast, a low typicality brand led to higher regret in the repeat condition than in the switch condition.
Third, when the prior experience was ambiguous, regret is greater in the high typicality/switch than in the low typicality/switch. On the other hand, the results in the repeat condition did not differ significantly from the results in the brand typicality.
The theoretical as well as practical implications were also discussed.
