The purpose of this thesis is to study systematic analysis of speech act theory and its practicality based on several types of illocutionary forces to achieve illocutionary acts. All human utterances can be described as locutionary acts, illocutionary acts and perlocutionary acts. I will propose appropricy conditions and Co-operative Principles on the basis of Austin(1962), Searle(1969) and Grice's(1975) theories.
In Chapter Ⅱ, utterence meaning are largely a part of indirect speech acts and reflect quite different aspects of utterances. It can be explained with the felicity conditions and Co-operative Principles.
In Chapter Ⅲ, the analysis of indirect speech act which may be captured by the felicity conditions and Co-operative Principles is based on analyzing not only speaker's motivations and performative attitudes but also intonations of utterances to decide one's intention for communication, since one usually chooses indirect expressions rather than direct expressions to show politeness and an option. Especially, in the analysis of conversational implicature, Co-operative Principles plays an important role because speaker's intentional violation of cooperative principle has the effect of expressing humor and jokes in conversation.
In Chapter Ⅳ, in order to apply all the concepts and principles I analyzed the movie "When Harry met Sally" which shows indirect speech act theory properly.
Further researches concerning other types of speech acts are required on the generalization of felicity conditions and Co-operative Principles which are not thoroughly discussed in this thesis.
