The purpose of this study is to examine the effect of traditional group games(game of glass beads, game of jackstones and game of sticks) on cognitive development of children, and to clarify its cognitive value, in order to furnish the information with which teachers could use such games more effectively in education.
To that purpose, 5 subjects were established as follows ;
First, shall the traditional group games have an effect on the formation of perceptive faculty, a kind of the advancement of infant's knowledge?
Second, shall the traditional group games have an effect on the formation of lexical faculty, a kind of the advancement of infant's knowledge?
Third, shall the traditional group games have an effect on the formation of comprehensive faculty, a kind of the advancement of infant's knowledge?
Fourth, shall the traditional group games have an effect on the formation of mathematical faculty, a kind of the advancement of infant's knowledge?
Fifth, shall the traditional group games have an effect on the formation of thinking faculty, a kind of the advancement of infant's knowledge?
The subjects were 34 children aged 3, 4 and 5(male : 22, female : 12), who were selected through pre-test on 30 children attending a kindergarten, an annex of W elementary school and 42 children attending a kindergarten, an annex of O elementary school, in Sangju, Kyungpook Province. The subjects were divided into test group(l7 children) and control group(l7 children).
As for investigation tool, Korea Behavioral Science Institute's(1993) Infant's Individual Intelligence Scale was used to measure the degree of development of infant's perceptive faculty, lexical faculty, comprehensive faculty, mathematical faculty and thinking faculty. Traditional games like game of glass beads, game of jackstones and game of sticks were performed with test group children.
In analysis, multivariate analysis was carried out, designating the group that performed games and the period of performance as independent variable, and five kinds of children's cognitive development as dependent variable. univariate analysis was carried out to confirm what was found out to be statistically significant.
Followings are the results of this study ;
Firstly, traditional group games were found out to have effect on the perceptive faculty, an infant's cognitive development(F=12.267, df=l, P<.05).
Secondly, traditional group games were found out to have effect on the lexical faculty , an infant' s cognitive development (F= 12.267, df = 1, P<.05).
Thirdly, traditional group games were found out to have effect on the comprehensive faculty, an infant's cognitive development(F=3.797, df=l, P>.05).
Fourthly, traditional group games were found out to have effect on the mathematical faculty, an infant's cognitive development(F=76.586, df=l, P<.05).
Lastly, traditional group games were found out to have effect on the thinking faculty, an infant's cognitive development(F=21.729, df=l, P<.05).
