In this study, I analyzed the narrative structure of detective novel that has been transformed from Korean modern novels, and cleared the novelistic meaning of it. Detective novel has been excepted from an object of literary study being understood by popular genre so far. But, the narrative characteristic of detective novel doesn't have a provable special quality in each genre. It has an important character that can be understood the narrative structure of novel.
I cleared the narrative structure of detective novel to analyze transformational ways that appear to Korean modern novels. Because novelistic meaning of transformational ways must presuppose the understanding of detective novel. Therefore, in chapter Ⅱ, I cleared the narrational and compositional ways of Western traditional detective novel, and attached such special quality with the structure of modern novel that is divided by 'story' and 'plot'. Also, I cleared the fact that narrative structure of detective novel is archetype of 'Oedipus's composition', and made it the foundation of discussion of chapter Ⅲ.
In chapter Ⅲ, I analyzed the transformational ways being appeared in Korean detective novel and modern novel. To analyze specific work, I examined the archetype of Korean detective novel in tradition of narrative. Because the lawsuit motive, found in Korean narratives, influenced to narrative structure of Korean detective novel. On the base of these comprehension, I confirmed the narrative quality of Korean detective novel and its transformational ways.
First of all, in discussion for detective novels of the 1930s-50s, I analyzed the narrative structure that was confirmed in Chae man-sik'novel, Kim Dong-in'novel, Kim Nae-sung'novels, Bang In-geun's novels, and arranged them as three special qualities divide from traditional detective story. There are as followings: Description by editorial omniscient point of view, long story time, reinforcement of personality of tale of adventure. Also, I made clear literary historical meaning of Korean detective novel in aspect of conquest of realism in the 1930s.
In analysis of transformational ways, I premised transformation of detective novel is a writer's narrative strategy that looks a recognition attitude of the world. Under these propositions, I analyzed Kim Sung-jong'novels, Lee Mun-yeol's novels, Jeon Sang-guk's novels and Lee Chung-jun's novels. Through these analyse, I could confirm the fact that narrative structure of detective novel has been deformed by very various way in Korean modern novel. And, I cleared the fact that change of the point of view which could be identified in such transformation contributes deepening of content and expanded of form in modern novel. In Lee Mun-yeol's novels, the narrative structure of detective novel has been deformed to emphasize 'story telling' in side of 'interest' of reading. But, such transformation, detached from quest for the world, take the function that recur to premodern story. Kim Sung-jong ' early novels, Jeon Sang-guk's initiation novels and Lee Chung-jun's quest novels overcome such function. With awareness of 'Criminal = I', They change the narrative structure of detective novel to search world truth. Specially, in Lee Chung-jun's novels, awareness of self-reflection has been detected to show fidelity of quest process.
Finally, in conclusion, I cleared concretely that the narrative structure of detective novel is occupying the novelistic meaning in modern society. Accommodate 'plot of delay and quest' of detective novel, modern novel can make recognize the violence of ideology to readers. Specially, showing that it is impossible that represent objective truth, metaphysical detective story allocates share of the analyse to readers. For this, metaphysical detective story overthrows custom of detective novel. Through discussion about it, I could confirm that the narrative structure of detective novel is the valid narrative strategy in modern society.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 한국 현대소설에 나타난 추리소설적 서사구조를 분석하고, 그것의 문학적 의미를 해명하는 데 목적이 있다. 지금까지 추리소설은 대중적인 장르로 이해되어 문학 연구의 대상에서 제외되어 왔다. 그러나 ‘이야기’와 ‘플롯’의 명확한 구분을 바탕으로 이루어진 추리소설은 한 장르의 특성이기에 앞서 인간과 세계의 진실을 규명하고자 하는 현대소설의 특성을 이해하는 중요한 단서가 된다. 이 논문에서 추리소설의 서사 구성 원리를 의미하는 ‘추리소설적 서사구조’를 분석하고자 하는 까닭이 여기에 있다.
한국 현대소설에 나타난 추리소설적 서사구조를 분석하기 위해서는 추리소설적 서사구조에 대한 개념을 명확하게 설정할 필요가 있다. 추리소설적 서사구조에 대한 개념과 범위를 설정하지 않고서는 그 서사적 변용이 갖는 문학적 의미를 해명할 수 없기 때문이다. 따라서 Ⅱ장에서는 기존 연구를 바탕으로 서구의 전통적 추리소설의 서사적 특성을 규명하고 그 구성 원리를 도출하여 추리소설적 서사구조의 개념과 범위를 설정하였다. 또한 전통적 추리소설이 현대소설의 특성인 ‘이야기’와 ‘플롯’의 구분을 명확하게 보여주면서 외디푸스적 구성의 원형임을 밝혀 Ⅲ장의 구체적인 분석을 위한 논의의 토대로 삼았다.
Ⅲ장에서는 한국 현대소설에 나타난 추리소설적 서사구조의 특성을 구체적인 작품 분석을 통해 살펴보았다. 이를 위해 먼저 한국 추리소설의 기본형을 그 서사적 전통 안에서 살펴보았다. 송사 모티브로 연결되는 한국의 서사적 전통에서 발견되는 수수께끼 구조의 특성은 한국 추리소설에서도 동일하게 확인된다는 점에서 중요한 의미를 지닌다. 이러한 연결을 바탕으로 해서 한국 추리소설의 서사적 특성과 현대소설에 나타난 추리소설적 서사구조의 변용 양상을 구체적인 작품 분석을 통해 살펴보았다.
먼저 1930-50년대 한국 추리소설의 서사구조를 플롯의 전개 양상에 따라 분석하여 서구의 전통적 추리소설과 구분되는 서사적 특성을 도출하였다. 채만식, 김동인, 김내성, 방인근의 작품을 대상으로 한 이러한 분석을 토대로 한국 추리소설의 서사적 변별성과 그 의미를 세 가지 측면에서 살펴보았다. 논평적 화자에 의해 서술된다는 점, 이야기 시간이 길어진다는 점, 인물들의 성격이 구체화되고 모험담적 성격이 강화된다는 점이 그것인데, 이는 한국 추리소설이 서구의 그것과는 구분되게 하는 중요한 특성이다. 1930년대부터 본격적으로 창작되기 시작한 이러한 한국 추리소설은 당대의 리얼리즘의 한계를 극복하면서 현대소설의 다양한 분화를 가능하게 한 계기가 되었다는 점에서 그 문학사적 의미를 찾을 수 있다.
변용 양상에서는 추리소설적 서사구조의 변용이 작가의 세계 인식 태도를 드러내는 서사적 전략이라는 전제 하에 김성종, 이문열, 전상국, 이청준의 소설을 분석하였다. 이러한 분석을 통해 한국 현대소설에서 매우 다양한 방식으로 추리소설적 서사구조가 변용되고 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 특히 시점의 변화가 중심이 된 추리소설적 서사구조의 변용이 발자크적 서사전통과 구분되는 현대소설의 내용적 심화와 형식적 확장에 기여하고 있음을 밝혔다. 이문열의 소설에서는 독서 과정의 재미라는 측면이 강조되면서 추리소설적 서사구조가 ‘대중성’을 확보하는 유용한 수단으로 이용될 수 있었다. 그러나 그러한 변용은 인간과 세계에 대한 작가의 탐색 정신과 유기적으로 연결되지 못하고 단성성의 공간인 전근대적 이야기로 회귀하는 부정적 기능을 담당하게 된다. 김성종의 초기소설이나 전상국의 입사 양식, 이청준의 자기반성적 탐색 양식은 ‘범인=나’라는 인식을 통해 그러한 부정적 기능을 극복하면서 추리소설적 서사구조와 결합된다. 이러한 작품들에서 인간의 진실과 감춰진 세계의 실상을 탐색하는 반성적 주체는 근대적 영웅인 탐정의 지위를 전복시키면서 현대사회 안에서 진정한 주체로 성장하게 된다. 특히 이청준의 소설에서는 탐색 과정의 과정적 진실성을 보여주기 위해 시간에 대한 동시적 인식이 드러나게 되는데, 이러한 인식은 자기반성적 인식과 연결되면서 다양한 해석의 가능성을 제시하게 된다.
마지막으로 추리소설적 서사구조가 현대사회 안에서 갖는 소설미학적 의미를 살펴보았다. 현대소설은 추리소설적 서사구조의 중요한 특징인 ‘지연과 탐색의 플롯’을 적절하게 변용하여 독자들에게 지배이데올로기의 억압적 힘을 인식할 수 있는 기회를 제공할 수 있다. 특히 추리소설의 장르적 관습을 전복하는 형이상학적 추리소설은 객관적인 세계의 재현이 불가능하다는 사실을 보여줌으로써 독자들에게 해석의 몫을 할당한다. 이러한 형이상학적 추리소설은 추리소설적 서사구조가 현대사회 안에서도 여전히 유효한 서사적 전략임을 반증한다. 독자들에게 무한한 해석의 지평을 제공하면서 파편화되고 중심이 부재하는 현대사회에 은폐된 지배이데올로기의 허위성을 폭로하고 인간에 대한 존재론적 해명을 위한 통로로 추리소설적 서사구조가 이용되고 있는 것이다.
