The purposes of this study was to investigate the development of Young Children's number representation, depending upon their abilities of rational counting. The research questions as follows:
1. Are there any significant differences in young children's levels of the performance of number representation, depending upon their levels of rational counting ability. The types of number representation considered in this study are the pictorial representation (drawing), symbolic representation (using number or symbol), and verbal representation (speaking)
2. Are there any significant differences in the order of young children's acquirement for the three different types of the number representation, depending upon their level of rational counting ability.
3. Can the examination tools produce consistent results in estimating the level of young children's performance of number representation. Ninety young children of three, four, and five years old were selected from a preschool in Busan. The subjects were divided into three groups (i.e. low, middle, high), depending upon their abilities of number counting. Then, each of the groups was randomly assigned to a task, related to one the three types of number representation.
The results of this study are as follows:
1. Three groups of different abilities in number counting have demonstrated significant differences in their performance on each type of number representation tasks.
2.The results based on a concrete object indicate that young children tend to acquire number representation in the order of the verbal representation, the pictorial representation, and then the symbolic representation. On the other hand, the results based on a nursery story indicate that young children tend to acquire number representation in the order of the symbolic representation, the pictorial representation, and then the verbal representation,
3.The results based on a concrete object tended to estimate yonug children's level of the performance of number representation higher then those based on a nursery story.
