The purpose of this study was to find the relationship career identity, career decision making and career decision level of regular high school students in a bid to help provide more systematic career guidance. In order to find the relationship, the research questions were posed as below:
First, what is the career identity of regular high school students?
Second, what is the career decision making style of regular high school students?
Third, what is the career decision level of regular high school students?
The stratified random sample of this study consisted of 330 regular high school students from Seosan and Taean, south Chungcheong province, who included 164 boys (49.7%) and 166 girls(50.3%).
The instrument used in this study to measure career identity was Kim Bong-hwan(1997)'s adapted version of Holland, Dairer and Power(1980)'s MVS(My Vocational Situation) Career Identity Scale. Another one to career decision-making style was the decision-making style inventory, part of Harren(1984)'s ACDM(Assessment of Career Decision Making), which was translated by Go Hwang-ja(1992). The third one was Go Hyang-Ja(1992)'s adapted version of Osipow, et al.(1980)'s Career Decision Level Scale, or CDS(career decision scale). For data analysis, t-test and one-way ANOVA were employed.
Major findings of this study were as follows:
First, there was no significant difference between the group with good career identity and the other with poor career identity in dependent and intuitive career decision styles. But the former group made a more rational career decision than the latter.
Second, concerning gap in career decision level, the group with good career identity was better at major conviction level than the other group, and the career undecidedness level of the former group was lower than that of the latter.
Third, the dependent and intuitive career decision styles were more prevailing in the rational career decision-making group than in the irrational one.
Fourth, as for connection between rational career decision-making style and career decision level, there was no significant disparity between the rational and irrational groups in major conviction level and career undecidedness level.
The findings of this study suggested that the regular high school students were much interested in their own future career, but there was little relationship among their career identity, career decision making and career decision level, regardless of gender and academic areas. Earlier studies should carefully be reviewed to identify what problems students are actually faced with, and they should be assisted to make a successful career exploration, see themselves correctly, develop their abilities and better respond to future changing environments. In order to enrich career education, it's required to delve into how career guidance was provided in school and to address its problems in a rational and systematic way.
