The purpose of this study was to examine if there was correlation between the parents-adolescents communication types perceived by adolescents and the quality of peer relationship, and to compare the differences in the parents-adolescents communication types and the quality of peer relationship according to the variables of their background and their parents' social-economic variables.
The research questions of this study were as follows;
First, are there any differences in the parents-adolescents communication types perceived by adolescents according to their background variables and their parents' social-economic variables?
Second, are there any differences in their quality of peer relationship according to their background variables and their parents' social-economic variables?
Third, what is the relations between the quality of peer relationship and the parents-adolescents communication types perceived by adolescents?
The 546 subjects were selected from the middle and high school students in the cities and rural areas in Chollabuk-do.
The survey instruments were Parents- Adolescences Communication Inventory that was used by Nam Jung-hong, based on Barnes & Olson in 1982 and on Satir in 1972, and The Quality of Peer Relationship that was made by Kim Jin-kyung in 2001.
The statistical methods adopted for data analysis were mean, frequency, t-test, F-test, Pearson correlation and Scheffe´ verification.
The results of this study were as follows;
First, there were some significant differences in parents-adolescents communication types according to the adolescents' background variables and their parents' social-economic variables. Middle school students perceived congruent stance higher than high school students, but high school students perceived dysfunctional communication higher than middle school students. Especially, the vocational high school students perceived highly super-reasonable stance and irrelevant stance in the communication with their parents. They perceived congruent stance highly in the communication with their fathers when their grades were high, when their fathers' levels of education were high, and when their parents were rich. However when their fathers' levels of education were low, they highly perceived dysfunctional communication such as placating, blaming, super-reasonable, and irrelevant stance. When their mothers were stepmothers, they perceived blaming stance in communication with their mothers. When their parents' levels of the economy were low, they perceived dysfunctional communication highly such as super-reasonable stance and irrelevant stance.
Second, there were some significant differences in the quality of peer relationship according to the adolescents' background variables and their parents' social-economic variables. Adolescents whose grades were high and parents' levels of economy were high or middle showed high level's peer relation quality in positive factor. Boys than girls, and adolescents whose father's level of economy were low showed higher level of negative factor.
Third, there was significant positive correlation between congruent stance in parents-adolescents communication and the positive factor of peer relation quality. On the other hand, The parents-adolescents dysfunctional communication showed significant positive correlation with negative factor of peer relation quality. The level of positive factor of peer relation quality such as companionship, emotional and social support, peer satisfaction was high when both father-adolescents and mother-adolescents communications were congruent stance. However, when adolescents perceived high dysfunctional communication with both father and mother, the level of negative factor of peer relationship quality such as relinquishment and helplessness, negligence was high.
The findings obtained from this study are as follows.
This study proved that there was statistically significant correlation between the parents-adolescents communication types and the quality of peer relationship. Therefore parents and adolescents should try to have a functional communication with each other and it would be necessary to enhance the education for the communication skills and develop the ways to improve parents-adolescents relationship in order to prevent the juvenile delinquencies and to improve the quality of the peer relationship.
