South Korea and North Korea have been under different systems for more than a half century since their separation. Over time, the two people have become differentiated. Therefore, it is necessary to study both South Korea and North Korea's curriculum in order to regain unity. This study analyzed North Korea's middle school music textbooks and got the following results.
First of all, in North Korea's music textbooks, ranging from the first grade through the sixth grade, the unit mainly consisted of sight singing, singing, appreciation, instrumental music, song and theory. Sight singing and singing are considered important, taking 60.18%.
Secondly, in the part of singing, the North Korean students learn scale and tone first and then move into sight singing and singing. The lyrics are mostly based on Ju-che ideology of Kim, Il-sung and Kim, Jung-il and the principles of communism.
The part of composition consists of making rhythm to a beat, harmony and tune based on the fundamental theory.
The part of appreciation unit is divided into the instrumental music and singing portions.
In the part of instrumental music, playing and appreciation are taught together. The traditional instruments, which take up a large part of the instrumental music, have been modernized.
In the traditional music unit, the two Koreas have the same contents in folk songs, key, beating and tuned tone of the instruments, but most of the original forms have been changed.
Recently, the musical terminology of North Korea's music textbooks have became based on the North Korean language as the contents are influenced by the language change.
It is found that the music textbooks of the North Korea has been used for political ideology and thus possess different aims than South Korea's musical education. Therefore, we think that the collaboration between the music researchers of the two Koreas and the active exchange of the music will help us to understand the advantages and the disadvantages of each country and ultimately lessen the differences of the music education of the two Koreas.
