This study was to examine the depression levels of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and by the behaviour of their mothers, who bring up the children. The correlations between the depression levels of the two groups are examined.
The subjects participating in the survey were 374 in total; 90 boys, 97 girls, and their mothers. The students were in the 4th, 5th, and 6th grades of the one selected elementary school in Kwangju.
The survey tool used for investigating the children's depression levels was Werry-Weiss-Peter's test of activity and depression rating for children. For the mothers, Beck's questionnaire of depression rating was used. The test of activity rating for the children was done first, followed by the Beck's test administered to their mothers. The data obtained from the survey was processed by descriptive statistical methods, and then the t-verification and variable analyses were conducted.
The found major results of this study can be summarized as follows:
Firstly, the ADHD-H group children showed higher depression level compared with that of ADHD-L group.
Second, among the children of ADHD group the girls' depression level was somewhat higher than the boys'. However, the difference between them is not statistically significant.
Third, the depression level of the mothers who raised the ADHD group of children was much higher than that of mothers' who brought up non-ADHD children. The difference was a significant one.
Fourth, when the correlation between the ADHD group children and their mothers was examined, a significant difference was not found between the ADHD-H and ADHD-L groups. However, a significant difference was found between the ADHD group and the non-ADHD group.
In conclusion, the ADHD-H group of children showed more depression than the ADHD-L group of children. The mothers of the ADHD group of children showed higher depression levels than those the non-ADHD children. The results of study suggest that the ADHD group of children has influence on the mothers' depression and also has possibilities to create other behaviour problems.
