The purpose of this study was to examine what type of teaching method was preferred by caregivers for science education in day-care centers and whether their background variables made any differences to the preference.
The research questions were posed as below:
1. What type of teaching method is favored by caregivers for science education in day-care centers?
2. Are their science teaching methods different according to background variables including personal, work and science-related ones?
3. What makes them to find it difficult to teach science?
The subjects in this study were 300 caregivers in day-care centers from the city of Jinju and its adjacent areas. They were asked to select one of Biddulph's three teaching styles when a survey was conducted.
The findings of this study were as follows:
Based on the findings of the study, there are some suggestions about future research efforts and more successful science education for preschoolers:
First, the caregivers were asked to choose one of Biddulph's three teaching styles, and their career, part of the personal variable, was identified as a factor to affect their preference for teaching method.
The questionnaire method was put to use to find out what type of teaching method they relied on for science education, but direct observation is called for in the future.
Second, there appeared significant relationship between preference for interaction method, one of Biddulph's three teaching styles, and the working variable among the caregivers in charge of multiage class and kindergarten class. It's required to make a more efficient and specialized approach toward the ultimate object of science education for preschoolers and teaching method.
Third, regarding the possible impact of the background variables on favored teaching method, it's found that teaching method wasn't determined by any single factor. The selection of teaching method was a complex process where different factors worked on.
When an attempt to envision teaching methods and strategies for preschoolers is made, it's mandatory to allow for caregiver, young children, teaching equipment and environmental condition above all.
Therefore, how caregivers look at existing science education for preschoolers should be examined first before paying attention to preferred teaching methods.
Their view should be investigated from different angles to identify what problems there are and to find a solution, and this would make a great contribution to science education for preschoolers.
