Elementary students start learning scientific concepts though daily life experiences and science classes at school. In order to have students form concepts properly in the early stages of studying scientific concept, it is extremely important to understand the various preconceptions that students have.
This study, in order to examine the process of forming concepts about the Classification of Living Things recently introduced in 6th grade science according to the 7th Curriculum, researched the process of forming concepts about classification of living things and types of misconceptions depending on the students' grade level.
The research used a Classification of Living Things concept test sheet developed by the researcher, and the subjects were 232 2nd grade students, 244 4th graders and 227 6th graders-703 students in total.
The results of the study are the following.
First, it was found that students of higher grades had formed more accurate concepts of classification of living things.
Second, the basis for classifying of living things and non-living things in students in lower grades was 'voluntary movement' and in higher level students 'intake of nutrients', 'respiration', 'reproduction'. Misconceptions the students had about living and non-living things were 'cars are living things because they move', 'chestnuts are non-living things because it does not move', etc.
Third, classification of animals and plants were usually based on the characteristic of 'moving.' And in 6th grades there were more students cited 'making it's own nutrients' as a standard. Also, misconceptions include 'animals breathe but plants do not breathe' and 'animal can talk or think but plants cannot talk or think'.
Fourth, most students in the lower grades have not formed detailed concepts of classifying plants. About 20% of students in the high grade form classification concepts. Also, types of misconception include 'barley is a cryptogam.', 'plants without fruit are gymnosperms.', 'plants with round seed leaves are dicotyledons' etc.
Fift, in classifying vertebrates and invertebrates, most students were aware of the backbone being the criteria, but less than 10% of low, and middle grade students and 60% of high grade students had formed classification concepts. Related misconception are 'snakes are invertebrates because they crawl', 'flies are vertebrates because they are not squiggly', etc.
Sixth, approximately 40-60% higher grade students had corrects concepts about classifying vertebrates into Fish, Amphibians, Reptiles, Birds, Mammals. The misconceptions include 'dolphins are fish because they live in the water', 'catfish are not fish because they have whiskers' 'newts, which are similar to lizards, are reptiles' 'snakes are not reptiles because they reproduce', 'bats are birds', 'penguins are not birds' 'people are not mammals, they are a separate biological group'.
