The purpose of the present study is to investigate the developmental characteristics of the self concept and the relationship between self concept and significant others. Especially, the focus was set on the development of self concept on the dimension of stability and continuity during adolescent years.
Previous studies are in conflict defining the developmental characteristics of the self concept during the adolescent years. Erikson defined the adolescent years as the period of identity crisis but Engel(1959), Carlson(1965), Coopersmith(1967), and Coleman(1974) conceptualized these years as the period of stable and consistent establishment of the self concept.
To clarify these theoretical issuses, the developmental characteristics of the self concept is studied here on the dimension of stability vs instability and continuity vs discontinuity. This study will help us to undersatnd the construct of the self and developmental phenomena of the adolescents simultaneously.
1.Purpose
The aim of the present study can be summarized as follows:
First, investigating the structural change of the self concept during the adolescents years on the dimension of continuity vs discontinuity.
Second, investigating the developmental characteristics of the adolescents' concept on the dimension of stability vs instability.
Third, investigating the significant others who have the powerful influence on the establishment of the adolescent's self concept.
2.Hypothesis
Following hypothesis are drawn from the theoretical background-
Hypothesis 1. The self cocept will be stable during the adolescent years.
1-1. The self concept will be stable across the school level groups.
1-2. The self concept will be stable in each sex groups.
Hypothesis 2. The developmental characteristics of the adolescents'self concept will be continuous during the adolesecnt years.
2-1. The developmental pattern of the concept during the adolescent will be continuous across the school level groups.
2-2. The developmental pattern of the self concept during the adolescent will the continuous in both sex groups.
Hypothesis 3. The influential significant others on the development of the self concept will be perceived differently as the school level change.
3.Method
Sudjects for the study were 557 students. 207 were sampled from 1st grade middle school students, 198 from 1st grade high school student, and 152 from freshmen of the university students. The Song In Sub's self concept inventory(1982) and Significant Others test were used. Statistical methods applied for the present study were general descriptive statistics, foctor analysis, analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. Reliability coefficient of the Test was also obtained. These statistical computatons were done by using SPSS computer programms.
4.Result
The results of. study were as follows;
First, the stability of the adolescents' self concept development analized by variance and multiple regression analysis showed that hypothesis 1-1 was not confirmed but hypothesis 1-2 was conformed. In other words, threre was significant change(p<.001) in the self concept across the school level, but no significant differences were found between the sex groups.
Second, the characteristics of the continuous structure of the adolescents' self concept analized by the analysis of variance using factor scores showed the same results as above. In other words, there was a significant change (p<.001) in the self concept across the school level group, but no significant difference were found between the sex groups.
Third, the relative importance of the significant others' influence on the adolescents' self concept formation analized by X² showed that in all sub-dimension of self concept except social one, the perception of the significant others was different among the school level groups. Hence hypothesis 3 was confirmed.
5. Conclusions
Following conclusion can be made based on the results of the present study;
First, the self concept of the adolescent changes as the school level increases, that is, the self concept is unstable and changing even in the adolescent's period. This situation is same to the both sex.
Second, the developmental pattern of the adolescents' self concept revealed discontinous structure. That is, the self concept of the adolescents needs to be understood not on the continuous structure but on the stage of qualitative change. This is same to the both sex.
Third, as school level increases, adolescents change theiir perception of the significant others who have the influentical power in establishing their self concept.
These results can be summarized that the self concept of the adolescents is still unstable and develops in the discontinuous way. These findings coincide with the previous studies which characterized the adolescent periods as storm and stress, identiity crisis and unstable therefore unpredictable years. A concrete and detailed description of the developmental aspect of adolescents' self concept is very important data to understand adolescent world. With the increase of the maladaptive behavior pattern including suicide of the adolescents, the research delving into their world are needed urgently. The present study is meaningful in this context.
