This thesis aims at illuminating the relationship between pupils' stress and its coping in accordance with the self~esteem of pupils in the 4th and 6th grades of an elementary school.
Followings are the questions to be dealt with in this thesis:
1) Are there significant differences in pupils' stress in accordance with their self-esteem?
2) Are there significant differences in the coping with pupils' stress in accordance with their self-esteem?
3) Do pupils' self-esteem and stress have significant influence upon the coping with their stress?
In order to examine the above questions, this writer gave 240 pupils in the 4th and 6th grades of 'S' Elementary School located in the city of Ansan tests on self-esteem, stress, and the coping with stress. The results of the test on self-esteem were divided into high-ranking 25% (52 pupils), the middle group (114 pupils), and low-ranking 25% (50 pupils),
The instruments adopted in this thesis are as follows:
1) For pupils' self-esteem- 'B' type test of Coopersmith's SEI (Self- Esteem Inventory) used by Kim Yang-Suk
2) For pupils's stress‥questionnaires suggested by Han Mi-Hyon and Yu An -Jin.
3) For the coping with stress‥Lazarus & Fiolkman's check list revised by Kim Hae-Ok.
Obtained data were analyzed statistically by using SPSS 10.0 for Windows. Pupils' self-esteem, stress, and the coping with stress were examined by t-test and One-way ANOVA. In order to find out the significance of the ANOVA analysis, Tukey's' multi-comparison' was used. The relationship of self-esteem, stress, and the coping with stress were examined by Pearson's correlation analysis.
The obtained results are as follows:
1) The group with low self-esteem showed the highest stress against variables such as parents, family, friends, academic achievements, teachers, school, and environment. In general, the group with high self-esteem showed less stress than the group with low self-esteem.
2) The group with high self-esteem coped with their stress positively and efficiently, while the group with low self-esteem and more stress negatively and inefficiently.
