(Abstract)
The purpose of this study was to compare the types and levels of juvenile delinquency between institutionalized youth and general youth groups. There were three specific questions this study attempted to examine; 1) is there any difference between two groups in terms of the level of delinquent act?, 2) is there any difference between two groups in terms of the types of delinquent act?, and 3) is there any difference between two groups in terms of primary factors associated with juvenile delinquency?
Data for this study came from two different sources. For institutionalized youth group, data were collected from 134 middle and high school students who are living in the Korea SOS Children Village located in Daegu, Soonchun, and Seoul areas. For general youth group data, 160 students were sampled from one middle school and one technical high school in Daegu area. All data were collected using a survey questionnaire.
The comparisons of the two groups revealed the following results. First, there was no significant difference between two groups in their levels of delinquent acts. Second, no significant difference was found between two groups in terms of the types of delinquent acts. Third, the primary factors associated with juvenile delinquency were comparable to each other. Several other findings and implications for research and practice were also discussed.
