This study is designed to explore what activities and environment for reading preschoolers stories as part of home environment for literacy are like and to inquire into what differences such activities and environment make by maternal age, educational background and job and by infant age, sex and factor as the first-born son or daughter and to contribute to highlighting the importance of reading activities as a vehicle for creating better literacy environment. With this in mind, the researcher raised the following research problems.
First, is there any difference in activities for reading children stories at home in accordance with the maternal variables and the infant variables?
Second, is there any difference in environment for reading children stories at home in accordance with the maternal variables and the infant variables?
The subjects were composed of a total of 1,600 mothers whose infants aged 3, 4, 5 and 6 attend six kindergartens and seven children's houses located in and around Daegu. The data were collected from December 1, 2000 to March 12, 2001. The researcher worked on 930 questionnaires with the exception of 65 ones deemed to be unusable among a total of 995 returned questionnaires, conducting χ²for the analysis.
The findings can be summarized as follows.
First, the survey as to differences in activities for reading children stories at home in accordance with the maternal variables and the infant variables shows that subordinate variables make differences.
Second, the survey of difference in environment for reading children stories at home in accordance with the maternal variables and the infant variables indicates that subordinate variables make differences.
