As humane beings are born sensitive to sound so preschool children`s daily life are closely related to the world of sound and music. For preschool children, music is a part of their life and musical experience helps develop not only their musicality but also joy of expression and personality. On the hand, music helps them develop the sense of belonging to the society and become receptive to the culture of the society.
Education is to help an individual grow and develop in mind and talent by preplanned behavioral change. Especially the music education in kindergarten is very important because the environment as the first step into music education in a life time is important for the forming of his/her musical disposition for the rest of their life. Therefore providing a good musical environment is the core in preschool children music education and an important element that help develop their musical talent.
In the thesis, to get a firm grip on the reality of the present preschool music education and suggest a solution to the problems of the education of private institutes, questionnaires were distributed among 270 teachers who were working for private institutes, thinking that it will help come up with a good way of kindergarten music education.
To this end, kindergarten music education was looked into in 4 parts, music education activity, music environment, the concept of music education, and teachers` level of understanding of and attitude toward music education. And the findings are as follows:
First, the present music education of kindergarten focused on singing activities and more than half of the institutes had Korean traditional music class. However the use of Korean classical musical instrument was significantly low, while the piano was the most popular musical instrument, which means there was some unbalance in the present music education.
Second, most of the school did not have sufficient physical environment even though the teachers were in recognition of the importance of the physical environment for music education. And due to the financial difficulty and teachers lack of awareness of the importance of music education, many institutes did not have music- class- only- teacher.
Third, for the music education concept, most of the institutes provided opportunities for the children to feel music tempo by themselves, but the children lacked in music concept and its application.
Fourth, the classes were heavily depended on teachers dominant initiation. The more experience the teachers had, the higher, the understanding of and attitude toward music was. But overall statistics about it did come out with a big difference.
So thereby the thesis was to help develop more favorable environment for preschool children music education on the basis of the findings.
