This study was conducted to analyze the effect of parents' attitude of bring up perceived by middle school students and their self-esteem on the decision of their career and help those students reasonably make decision of their ways. Another purpose of this study was to help provide the basic materials of the direction of students' career and the consulting education program for their parents.
The subjects were 618 students(312 boys, 306 girls) of the third grade of four middle schools located in the middle and small cities of Western Gyeongnam.
As measuring tools for research, we utilized 'Measures of Father and Mother's Behavior of Bring Up' developed by Heo, Myo Yeon(2000), 'Investigation about Self-esteem' standardized by Gang, Jong Gu(1986), and 'Investigation about the Patterns of Making Decision of One's Way' of Go, Hyang Ja(1992).
The hypotheses of this study were as follows:
1. There will be some differences between parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem and those students' decision of ways in accordance of statistical natures.
2. There will be the interrelation between parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem and those students' decision of ways.
3. Parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem will influence on those students' decision of ways.
The main results of this study were as follows:
First, we investigated the effects which each level of parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem influences on the reasonable level of those students' decision of ways. As a result, a total of a significant variate was 20.2%. When both father and mother's attitudes was positive and generous, and students' self-esteem was high, those students showed to tend to reasonably make decisions of their ways.
In the effects which each level of parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem influences on the intuitive level of those students' decision of ways, a total of a significant variate was 7.3%. When parents‘ attitudes was negative, and students' self-esteem was low, those students tended to intuitively make decisions of their ways.
In the effects which each level of parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem influences on the dependent level of those students' decision of ways, a total of a significant variate was 10.3%. When parents' attitudes was negative, and students' self-esteem was low, students usually tended to dependently make decisions of their ways.
Second, in the case of sex, there was not a significant difference in students‘ decision of ways.
Third, the reasonable level of students' decision of way only showed a significant difference regarding fathers‘ education level, but there was not a significant difference regarding mothers' education level.
Fourth, there was a significant difference only in the reasonable level of students' decision of way concerning the economic level and the level of academic records.
Finally, it was found that in the interrelation between parents' attitudes of bring up and students' self-esteem and students' decision of way, more positively students perceived their parents' attitudes of bring up, more reasonably students tended to make decision, and more negatively students perceived their parents' attitudes of bring up, more intuitively or dependently students tended to make decision. Besides the interrelation between the students' self-esteem and their decision of way showed that there was a positively significant difference in the reasonable level and a negatively significant difference in the dependent level.
As we can see in the above results, it was proved that some statistical factors concerning home environment had large influence on the students' decision of career, and parents' attitude of bring up their children perceived by students and those students' self-esteem also had large influence on the students' decision of career. Therefore, for students' reasonable decision of way and the effective direction of career, it's necessary to develop and implement the programs for parents' consulting education of their children's ways and parents' education for the inspiration of their children's self-esteem.
