This research has been carried out to show the house-remodelling design to which Universal Design available to all the people is applied for the moving impaired, derived from the survey of their rating of furnishings and interior facilities in their houses and their preliminary recognition and necessity of Universal Design, and to present considerations to have to be dealt with in the house-remodelling in accordance with their degrees of disability and housing scales, and solutions of them.
This research took as its object the moving impaired who live with their families in their homes, who currently form a large majority of the disabled and demand eagerly the house-remodelling.
From questionnaires, I, the researcher, have examined (1) their rating of the convenience and contentment of furnishings and facilities in their houses, (2) their preliminary recognition of Universal Design and their necessity of it, which was measured after making it known to them, (3) differences, varied according to their degrees of disability and housing scales, between their evaluation of the convenience and contentment of furnishings and facilities in their current houses and their demand for the house-remodelling proper to their actual condition, and from case studies, (4) complaints of furnishing arrangement and space utilization in their dwellings.
Questionnaires were completed by distributing them directly to the moving impaired who have lived in an organization for the disabled at Yangcheon-gu, Seoul, a Presbyterian church at Noweon-gu, Seoul and a hospital at Yeonsu-gu, Incheon through the researcher's direct visitation. Among 192 copies that were returned, only 189 copies could be used for an analysis since three were poorly recorded. And case studies of four families with the moving impaired who live respectively in Seoul and Incheon include measuring, photographing and sketching the inner space of their houses, and interviewing them about daily inconveniences in the current dwelling space.
To analyze questionnaires returned, the frequency, percentage, mean, t-test and one way ANOVA of every article was performed with the computer program SPSS/PC+ and materials gained from case studies was used for grasping the actual condition of the current dwelling space with measured, photographed and sketched datum, and understanding their complaints and needs with contents gained from interviews.
Based on these analyses, Universal Design applied house-remodelling design for the moving impaired was proposed in this paper.
The results acquired from questionnaires and case studies tell us the following.
    1) The rating of the moving impaired of the convenience and contentment of furnishings and facilities in their houses has turned out to be generally low. This evaluation seems to be derived from the uniform space utilization of interior facilities, height of furnishings and facilities and height difference between floors in their houses not considering their actual condition. The house-remodelling with adaptability considering their actual circumstances is urgently needed.
    2) The rating of their current dwellings has come out to be the lowest from selecting "Never think so" to the question ‘Do you think your current dwelling is convenient for the disabled to live'. This estimation seems to be created from their inconvenient (or impossible) access to the furnishings and facilities in their dwellings. These inconveniencies might have decreased their physical and mental adaptabilities to their dwelling environments.
    3) The necessity of dwelling facilities and furnishings for allowing the use of a wheelchair has been revealed to be generally high. According to their degrees of disability and housing scales, the necessity varied. For example, persons with leg/arm disabilities more than those with leg disabilities and persons who live in large-scaled houses more than those who live in small-scaled houses demand wheelchair access more. To meet needs originated from their degrees of disability and housing scales, the systematic dwelling model for the moving impaired has to be prepared as soon as possible.
    4) The dissatisfaction of the height difference between floors and the height of furnishings and facilities in their dwellings has been exposed to hold a large majority of their complaints about current dwellings. Actually the remodeling of the height difference between floors and the height of furnishings and facilities in their dwelling-remodeling has to be considered above all. Respondents were also discontent with bathtubs in their bathrooms which just occupy its space and have no use. The study on bathing facilities considering their physical condition is seriously needed.
    5) Especially in the small-scaled house, there was not enough space in any of the room including a bathroom to use a wheelchair. The disabled who could move by pulling their bodies by themselves compared with the ones who lived in their comparatively spacious dwellings for allowing the use of a wheelchair rated the convenience of furnishings and facilities of current dwellings relatively low. Housing facilities giving consideration to their degrees of disability, housing scales and behavior characteristics is strongly demanded.
Considering above results gained from questionnaires and case studies, the point to be primarily considered in the house-remodelling for the moving impaired will be holding space enough to turn their wheelchairs freely by removing the height difference among floors and thresholds. Even though removing the height difference among floors and thresholds could be easily solved through a slope way which would be made temporarily, getting enough space for their wheelchairs would be difficult for the low-income disabled. Establishing furnitures for containing on the upper part of a wall, however, allowing the moving impaired with their hands convenient access to them or installing furnitures with lift racks to control their height will give them space enough to make their wheelchairs move freely. For securing space for wheelchairs in even small-scaled houses, changeable walls would be helpful. And also a plan considering flexible house-remodelling on the horizon has to be prepared when making the plan to build a new house, for example, laying pipes on the ceiling would be more advantageous than on the bottom for efficient house-remodelling down the line.
