    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of pelvic tilt exercise on the characteristics of gait in the patients with hemiplegia.
    One session of pelvic tilt exercise in lower trunk initiated pattern for 20 minutes was administered to 21 hemiplegic patients in one general hospital in Taejon.
    The inclusion criteria for this study were: hemiplegia due to stroke or traumatic brain injury, ability to walk 45 meters without physical assistance and use of cane or walker, absence of a knee contracture, a hip-flexion contracture greater than or equal to 15 degrees, or an ankle plantar-flexion contracture greater than or equal to 5 degrees, absence of any medcial contraindication to exercise or walking, ability to understand and follow commands.
    Characteristics of gait such as velocity, cadence, base of support, stride length, step length and foot angle were measured before, immediately and 30 minutes after exercise in each patient.
    Ink foot print method was used and the specially designed clock to measure the time spent for walking 10 meters.
    The following results were obtained.
    1. Gait velocity was significantly increased immediately after pelvic tilt exercise (29.88 m/sec) compared to that of pre-exercise (26.46 m/sec) and significantly increased 30 minutes after the exercise (31.79 m/sec) from the level of immediate post-exercise.
    2. Cadence was significantly increased immediately (78.87 steps/min) and 30 minutes after exercise (79.91 steps/min) compared to that of pre-exercise (74.72 steps/min).
    3. Base of support was significantly narrowed immediately (13.26cm) and 30 minutes after exercise (13.24cm) compared to that of pre-exercise (13.98cm).
    4. Stride length was significantly increased immediately in unaffected side (73.39cm) and in hemiplegic side (76.06cm) and 30 minutes after exercise in unaffected side (76.06cm) and in hemiplegic side (78.84cm) compared to that of pre-exercise in unaffected side (67.90cm) and in hemiplegic side (70.55cm).
    5. Step length was significantly increased immediately in unaffected side (36.81 cm) and in hemiplegic side (37.94 cm) and 30 minutes after exercise in un- affected side (37.77 cm) and in hemiplegic side (39.29 cm) compared to that of pre-exercise in unaffected side (33.76 cm) and in hemiplegic side (35.10 cm).
    6. Foot angle of affected side was significantly decreased immediately (12.13˚ and 30 minutes after exercise (12.65˚) compared to that of pre-exercise (14.12˚) but foot angle was increased in the unaffected side without statistical significance.
    7. None of the general characteristics such as sex, age, duration after onset of hemiplegia, side of paralysis of the patients was proved significant in the change of the gait characteristics in this study.
    It could be concluded that pelvic tilt exercise might be a effective addition in the treatment program to improve gait pattern in patients with hemiplegia.

    5. Step length was significantly increased immediately in unaffected side (36.81 cm) and in hemiplegic side (37.94 cm) and 30 minutes after exercise in un- affected side (37.77 cm) and in hemiplegic side (39.29 cm) compared to that of pre-exercise in unaffected side (33.76 cm) and in hemiplegic side (35.10 cm).
    6. Foot angle of affected side was significantly decreased immediately (12.13˚ and 30 minutes after exercise (12.65˚) compared to that of pre-exercise (14.12˚) but foot angle was increased in the unaffected side without statistical significance.
    7. None of the general characteristics such as sex, age, duration after onset of hemiplegia, side of paralysis of the patients was proved significant in the change of the gait characteristics in this study.
    It could be concluded that pelvic tilt exercise might be a effective addition in the treatment program to improve gait pattern in patients with hemiplegia.
