A wide spread of Internet brought us a big change over our life. We could access data easily, and construct an information-oriented society with a superhighway information network. However, problematic Internet use became a topic that had attracted a great deal of attention because it associated with social and psychological impairment.
We call those side-effect 'Internet Addiction Disorder' for 'Webaholism'. 'Internet Addiction' means the status of social, physical and psychological impairment caused by excess computer use.
It is one of important activities to solve a social problem of human relations in the area of welfare work. Therefore, the main purpose of my study is to examine the concept of 'Internet Addiction' as a social problem. Compared with former studies that has described an individual and inner factor, my report have a distinctive feature. It is dealt with the relation between 'Internet Addiction' and Parent-Adolescent Communication.
The Primary research questions were, " Is there any difference of Parent-Adolescent Communication between addicted and non-addicted group? "
"Is there any difference of Communicational frequency in two groups?"
The data obtained through 222 internet survey were taken statistics(including Frequency, Mean, Standard Deviation, t-test, Correlation Avalysis, x^2 test) to verify these questions.
The results were as followings;
<l> According to survey, 25.2% of all were classified a normal internet users, the first stage addicted group were 69.4% and serious addicted group were 5.4%. That is , more than 70% respondents were represented the first stage or serious addicted status. The range of dysfunctional Communication patterns showed us that placating pattern was 85.6% as a general case. Blaming pattern occupied 12.6% , 1.8% was for irrelevant pattern. All patterns were returned except super-reasonable pattern.
<2> Parent-Adolescent Communication frequency score of addicted group was lower than that of non-addicted group.
<3> Addicted & Non-addicted group all were confirmed to use placating pattern for dysfunctional Communication pattern following blaming pattern.
<Table> rank of Mal-functional pattern in two groups
As you see at table, while non-addicted group had not pattern like super-reasonable, addicted group showed no pattern like irrelevant, super-reasonable.
Generally speaking, two groups did not seem to be distinguished at dysfunctional communication pattern. But in the view of frequency of Parent-Adolescent Communication was reported that addicted group's frequency was less. Non-addicted group's communication was more smooth and often happened. Addicted adolescent used four dysfunctional patterns much than non-addicted group did.
All in all, it was proven that 'Internet Addiction' had a close relations with Parent-Adolescent Communication. The Parent-Adolescent Communication of addicted group was more closed and dysfunctional
Based on these results, I want to suggest as following.
First of all, let parents recognize how important their role to their children's 'Internet Addiction' and how much their children need their help. So make parents take part in leading their children.
Besides we have to develop educational & consultative program for 'Internet Addiction' both side of Adolescent & parents, and make a system to inspect in order to continue to support them. Finally we have to establish new institution that foster specialist for cure of family problem.
