The runaway adolescents feel stressed through the negative experiences from various life events. However, a social support to copy stress doesn't seem to be very functional. The previous research on the runaway adolescents are centered to the analysis of cause, and problem-solving process is carried out only in the form of counseling and education. So after comparing and analyze the contents and sources of social supports between the runaway adolescents and normal adolescents, this research is to find out what social supports for the runaway adolescents are like and whether there is any relationship between the types of social supports and their acts.
The specific research purposes can be stated as follows:
First, are there any differences in the contents of the social support between runaway adolescents and normal adolescents ?
Second, are there any differences in the sources of the social support between runaway adolescents and normal adolescents
The research on the social support between runaway adolescents and normal adolescents is conducted to find out the above research problems. The subjects are 62 runaway adolescent and students of 4 middle and high schools in jeon ju city.
Two hypothesis are established based on the above-stated purposes and method of research. <Hypothesis 1> is to test the differences in the contents of social support, and <Hypothesis 2> is to test the differences in the sources of social support The contents and sources of social support in two groups are compared and analyzed through T-test.
The results in this research are as follows.
First, <1-Hypothesis 1> is tested positively as a result of comparison of contents in social support between runaway adolescents and normal adolescents. The contents of social support for runaway juveniles are lower than those for common juveniles in emotional, appraisable, informational and material support area. The appraisable support is the lowest among the 4 social supports.
Second, there are meaningful differences in all sources of social support except for a friend as a result of comparison of sources in social support between runaway adolescents and normal adolescents
Runaway adolescents recognize friends as the highest source of social support. In contrast, common adolescent recognize mother as the highest. The support of mother, father, bothers, and friends is accepted positively in <Hypothesis 2>.
Based on the above-stated results of the research. following conclusions are reached,
First, the social-skill training is required to recognize properly and accept the social support because social support may not be recognized and is not provided properly for their environment.
Second, coping resources in runaway adolescents are classified into personal, informal, and formal resources. And they function not so much in a integrate and organic way as in a separate way. So, personal coping ability and coping resources should be intensified by intervention of social work about runaway adolescents, recovery of relationship should try to be got through intensification of in formal support network, and reciprocal organizational intervention policy which intercept causes of runaway, prevention of runaway, and intervention of runaway problem are required through support of formal resources.
Third, parents education including discipline and communication between parents and runaway adolescents are intensively required because the relationship between parents and runaway adolescents are very serious. Especially, "parents education for a father" should be carried out because there is a breakdown of communication with a father.
Fourth, runaway adolescents get the social support from a friend(s). However, attention should be paid to the fact that social support perception is deeply related to misdeed and runaway. So, the peer counseling should be used after a wide assessment.
Fifth, the program which improve self-value of runaway adolescents is required to be used because appraisable support plays a crucial role in forming self-value.
Six, the problem of runaway adolescents is not so much solved by short-term intervention as needed continuous support through the development. So case management based on comprehensive need of runaway juvenile is more important than any other temporary intervention in runaway problems.
