It has been reported by many scholars that the most important period in the developmental process of man is the infancy and that early weaning also is desirable for the physical and intellectual development of infants.
The primary purpose of the present study is to see what extent preschool in charge of early education meets educational expectations by measuring the effects of preschool education on the basis of lower grades of elementary school, thereby attempting to make suggestions for the improvement of the present preschool course and contents of its activities. This study was carried out by distributing questionnaires to elementary school teachers selected and analyzing their responses. The results obtained are summarized as follows:
The elementary school teachers recognize on the whole the effects of preschool education. Although the physical and intellectual goals attained by preschool education are relatively highly evaluated, the social goal is insignificant in terms of its effect. Therefore it is felt necessary to improve the contents of preschool education course and activities. The educational goal of preschool and contents of its activities may be considered to be almost similar to those of an ideal preschool.
The following are the suggestions for the improvement of the present preschool education.
1. The correlation revealed between the goal of preschool education and the behavioral development of elementary school children is high, but it is low between the social goal and physical goal. This suggests the necessity of solving the problems involved in the programming of preschool course and its operation. Therefore the authorities concerned should formulate new programs for the preschool education course and spare no effort for its reasonable operation.
2. In spite of the fact that sociality is of importance in preschool education, its development is low compared with other goals. This calls for grave reflection of those who are responsible for preschool education.
3. The present study is intended to measure the effects of preschool education based on the subjective evaluation of elementary school teachers. It is desired that an objective evaluation scale by classified goals of education be developed. It is also considered ecessary to carry out using a standardization test a comparative study of the group received preschool education and the group not received preschool education.
4. It is further required to conduct a comprehensive study that reflects the psychological, social and environmental factors of preschool education.
