Mentally retarded children suffering from ADHD find it hard to concentrate on work in class and easy to depend on their impulse. It follows that an increase in the effects of class requires concentration and a decrease in impulsive behavior.
With this in mind, the researcher applied collage-based programs to mentally retarded elementary school children suffering from ADHD with a view to determining the effects of collage programs on them in terms of an increase in their concentration and a decrease in their impulsive behavior.
The subjects were composed of three children attending an elementary school in Geoje, Kyeongsang Province.
The experimental design is prior and post single subject one with collage technique as an independent variant and an increase in concentration and a decrease in impulsive behavior as a dependent variant.
The subjects were selected with the help of diagnostic standards for the lack of concentration and excessive behavioral handicap and ADHD evaluative scale. K-cbcl test and mediation programs using collage technique based on the baseline of concentration behavior and impulsive behavior were conducted 11 times as the prior test, and concentration hours and the frequency of impulsive behavior were observed and recorded in each session. And the post test was conducted in the same way as the prior test. All the observed things were made into graphs. The researcher came to the following conclusions.
The survey focuses on the influences of collage techniques on the concentration problems and excessive behavior problems of the mentally retarded children. The three subjects showed a high level of concentration problems and impulsiveness. But the collage-based mediation of the research proved to increase the concentration of the subjects and to reduce impulsive behavior, which means that functional relationship between collage techniques and concentration problems in addition to impulsive behavior was confirmed.
The post test conducted a week later showed an increase in concentration and a decrease in impulsive behavior in case of all the subjects in comparison with the latter half of mediation. Compared with the prior test, it turned out to be effective in improving concentration and reducing impulsive behavior.
The researcher came to the following conclusions on the basis of the findings and interpretation.
First, the collage technique, one of the fine-art-based treatment for mentally retarded students showing lack of concentration and excessive behavior helped all the subjects to improve more concentration during the post test than the mediation sessions.
Second, the survey shows that all the subjects' impulsive behavior decreased thanks to the collage-based programs, which means that the collage technique was effective.
The researcher would like to make the following suggestions on the basis of the conclusions above.
Due to the limitation of this research in terms of location and the number of the subjects, more analytic and systematic experiments should necessarily be carried out by wider location and handicap area for the sake of validity and objectivity.
If the collage technique goes hand in hand with daily life's training, other problematic behavior will be expected to be improved.
