A child with Pervasive Development Disorder(PDD) has fundamental and serious difficulty making relationship and communicating to others, and these problems related to the development of sociability negatively affect the child in all the area of its social life and become the most important problem.
In this study, to find out the process of the change of the interaction of parents-children, two couples of mother and child were the objects; each of the mothers has a child with PDD and wanted to participate in the play therapy for improving the interaction between parents and children.
The purpose of the play therapy was to improve the relationship between parents and children using physical, direct and instructing way suitable for the children's quality and level with exactly understanding that current condition, desire and the quality of parent-child influence the interaction including the developmental level of the children with PDD.
The play therapy was performed for 100 minutes, twice a week and to focus on the individual family' desire, it was performed with the person to person way of researcher and mother.
The results of this study are as follows;
Firstly, application of the play therapy actually improved the interaction between the parents and the children with PDD in MIM. The parents respected the feeling and the desire of the handicapped children through the process and tried to sensitively respond to the children's behaviors and characteristics. In the process of the interaction between the children and their parents, positive changes were found like eye-contacts, physical touch, relaxation, attention and sharing pleasure and so on. The children's participation was also remarkably increased.
Secondly, application of the play therapy actually enhanced the interactions between the parents-children with PDD in free play situations. Parents became to share the pleasure by sensitively coping with the children's demands and response. Accordingly the children also tried interactions with their parents like expressing their desire physically or verbally.
In addition, the effects obtained from the play therapy may be generalized according to the continuous impact of interactions between parents and the children enhanced through their participation in play therapy as shown in pretest, posttest, and additional test and the parents report regarding flexible applications of the techniques and rules in various occasions and then the children positively responses.
