The purpose of this study is that was to examine the effect of social skill and interpersonal relationship in schizophrenic outpatient with the group art therapy.
The group members consisted of 12 outpatient. 6 patient belonged the experimental group and the rest belonged to the controlled group for this research. There were 10 sessions from september l. 2000 to December 5. 2000 and each session lasted approximately 120 minutes. To confirm the effect of the group art therapy, the patient had the social skill sales test and interpersonal relationship change scale test in pretest-posttest therapy.
The analysis on the effects and statistical analysis were done using social skill scales test and interpersonal relationship change scales test. An analysis was done on art activity according to each session as the qualification evaluation. The content analysis was done on the response during each session through observation. The observers were a counsellor, a health nurse, the author.
The test scores before and after the program were compared between the experimental groups and controlled groups for skills and relationship change. According to 2-way mixed ANOVA analysis was done to determine the significance of these results.
Among the description of relationship change in social skills was F(1,5)=32.58, P< .01 in the experimental group after the program and was F(1,5)=0.25, ns. in the controlled group.
Among the description of relationship change, the change in relationship change was F(1,5)=30.72, P< .01 in the experimental group after the program and was F(1,5)=1.42, ns. in the controlled group.
These were showed a statistically significant difference on the social skills and interpersonal relationships after art therapy. Thus, art therapy changed those schizophrenic outpatient positively in social skills and interpersonal relationships.
The major findings were as follows :
Firstly, The patients were gradually intended to participate in group activity and to concern with other persons as expressing their concerns to other patients to the therapist.
Second1y, The level of social skill was increased by working in group.
Thirdly, The interpersonal relationship was promoted by working in group.
As described above, the group art therapy resulted in the positive change for social rehabilitation of the patient.
According to the results as above, the author suggested that the art therapist should be regard to :
Firstly, The follow-up is continuously needed to social rehabilitation after discharge. Secondly, The social skill and interpersonal relationship between program and real life should be linked closely.
Thirdly, Family members as well as patient must participate in group working. In conclusion the aspects of connective and continuity were lacking.
