The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of the social development program to improve the children's social competence and pro-social thinking abilities. To achieve this propose, the research questions were established as follows : First, does the social development program have an effect on the children's social competence? Second, does the social development program influence the pro-social thinking?
The subject of this study consisted of 80 preschool children aged 4-5 attending the kindergarten in Chon-Ju. In order to examine the effect of the social development program, two groups were diveded into 40 participants each. One was an experimental group while the other was a control group. The experimental group participated in the social development program for total 28 Sessions (2 Sessions per week over the 14 weeks) while the control group didn't. The instruments were Preschool Scio affective Profile (;PSP) developed by La Freniere, Dumas,Cupuano & Dubeau(1992) and Skill Situations Measure developed by McGinnis & Goldstein(1990). The data were analyzed by SPSSWIN. Statistics such as percentile, t-test and paired t-test were used.
The result appeared as follows.
first, the children who participated in the social development program showed increase in the social competence and decrease in anger-aggressiveness. There was, however, no significant difference in the anxious-withdrawn. Second, the children who participate in the social development program have been improved in pro-social thinking than those who did not participated in. Particularly, emotional control ability, interpersonal control ability, and adjustment ability appeared among the children who participated in this program. Therefore the social development program can be applied to improve the children's social competence and pro-social ability.
