The purpose of this study is to apply art therapy to children with oppositional disorder showing aggressive acts to find out its effect.
This study was conducted with a child who picks on colleagues on purpose and is defiant and hostile to adults. This child is a five-year-old boy diagnosed as a child with oppositional disorder who lives with his parents and a four-year-old sister and whose mother has a negligent, inconsistent, and threatening attitude toward her children.
The therapy was performed along with consultation with the mother at the art therapy room of welfare institution once a week, 45 minutes for each, for about ten months. The result is as follows:
First, art therapy is effective on behaviors of children with oppositional disorder afflicting their colleagues on purpose. After art therapy, his aggressive acts threatening and picking on colleagues on purpose reduced remarkably.
Second, art therapy is effective on defiant attitude of children with oppositional disorder to their mother, After art therapy, aggressive acts getting angry and flinging things to his mother reduced remarkably.
Third, art therapy is effective on acts of children with oppositional disorder afflicting their brothers and sisters on purpose. After art therapy, aggressive acts beating and afflicting his sister and breaking her things reduced remarkably.
Fourth, the art therapy is effective for the handicapped children with oppositional disorder who frequently show aggressive behaviors on the whole.
The analysis results that examined whether or not the artistic therapy is effective to cure children's aggressive behaviors tell that the aggressive acts reduced at the 'attack scale' among K-CBCL problematic behavior syndrome scales.
In summary, this study demonstrates that art therapy is effective on aggressive acts of children with oppositional disorder.
