The purpose of the study was to explore the effects of expression of self-portrait as an group art therapy program on the problem behaviors and self-concept of adolescents. The design of the study was group pretest-posttest control group design. The subjects were 20 adolescents (12-male middle shcool student, 8-femail middle school student) in Daegu city.
They were randomly divided and assigned into an experimental group of ten and control group of ten.
The program was composed of thirteen classes(a class is between sixty and ninety minutes) and has run for seven-weeks (two days a week).
The instruments of measurement used in this study were; K-CBCL(Korea-Child Behavior Checkist) test, self-concept test developed and standardized by lung Won-Sik(1968).
Chi-square test and Independent Samples t-test were employed for statistical analyses. To test hypothese. t-tests were employed for the analysis of the data. Also, this study was performed using the qualitative analysis to know adolescents' problem behaviors and self-expression changes.
The purposes of this study were as follow;
First, will the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program decrease the problem behaviors of adolescents?
Second, will the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program improve the adolescents self-concept?
Third, how do the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program influence group member in the process of the program?
The results of this study are as follow;
First, the scores of problem behaviors in the experimental group were significantly reduced than those of the control group. Pre mean value was 166.30 and post mean value was 146.20. P value was .003 which was statistically significant at the .01 level. So it was proved that the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program reduced the problem behaviors.
Second, the level of self -concept of experimental group significantly was improved compared with that of the control group. Pre mean value is 319.70, post mean value 338.60 and P value .010 is significant at the .05 level. So it was proved that the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program changed the self-concept positively. But there were no significant differences in self criticism, physical self, moral ethical self and social self.
Third, during the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program, group members slowly improved in problem behaviors and self-expression. They used harsh language and action, were careless in the initial step but developed polite and positive attitude, concentrated task as the session advanced.
This study was proved that the expression of self-portrait in the group art therapy program has definite effect on reducing adoleescents' problem behaviors and improving the self-concept.
