Adviser : prof. Hong, Young-Ki
In the evening of October 19, 1948, the greatest armed revolt in the Republic of Korea history broke out in Yosu, South Jeolla Province. This incident was led mainly by the 14th regiment leftist soldiers in Yosu, and then spread to adjacent regions rapidly. We generally refer to this incident as the 'Yosun Incident,'
However, the incident related subject consistently remains not to talk publicly like a taboo for past 54 years. Even the ones, who watched and experienced the incident, still want to keep silent. For such reasons, the Yosun Incident has been researched little, despite of its importance of the research subject in Korean modern history.
Even until now, the incident is difficult to understand its features and historical significance exactly because of insufficient research in depth and diversity.
There are lots of things to be done in advance in order to research the Yosun Incident actively. First of all, main body, which had triggered the incident, has to be clarified. Leading power and people involved have to be urgently investigated in detail. However, there has been almost no analysis on the activities of the 14th Regiment leftist soldiers as well as the leftist regional activists, who took the lead in the incident.
For instance, even story of the 14th Regiment company commander Ji-Hwe Kim and Soon-Sok Hong, who took the lead in partisan activities at the Jiri mountains, has been known in fragments only. The same case is to be applied to Chang-Soo Ji, who instigated armed revolt in Yosu. Almost no information or records of his doings have been disclosed.
Hence, hopefully, the paper would be of help to understand the participant class by investigating and clarifying various classes and their roles involved in the Yosun Incident. The paper is thought to! be of help to understand features and historical importance of the incident as well.
The paper has classified the participants into : leading power, actively participating group and simply participating group. And each group has been subdivided.
The Yosun Incident has been generally known to be an incident lead by the 14th Regiment soldiers. But the generally accepted ideas have been given no detailed verification. Keeping these facts in mind, the participants have been reviewed as a whole. In this regard, followings have been classified: participation rate and roles of the soldiers, civilians and students.
In other words, to clarify features of each type, the incident has been investigated and classified depending upon followings : whether or not they planned and took the lead in the incident, whether or not they participated in it voluntarily and actively, and whether the participation was forced or passive.
This research has made use of the material in the above as much as possible by reviewing it exactly from point of view of the objectivity. If features of participating group of the leading power and residents could be disclosed, the paper would provide an opportunity to be closer to the truth of the history of the incident.
