      The characters in Lee's tales can be grouped three categories: humanistic character, characters between the good and the bad , and reality-critical characters.
      First, humanistic character shows compliance with reality even though the motivation and the process are different. This character is away from reality in some ways, even though the people with that character can be loved and respected by him/her neighbors.
      This character considers unconditional love and blind sacrifice for the sons and daughters as unchangeable truth in modern times as well as in old ones. It criticizes continuously the people who get rid of his/her obligations and emphasizes on the needs by which the beauties of filial piety('hyo') and endless love for one's sons and daughters are be reserved.
      In compliance with his/her community's rules he/she accepts his/her destination without resistance or reject against it. Tales demonstrate that love among the members of a family is not related to money.
      Second, characters between the good and the bad are considered to be the people who live against each other between the good and the bad. Types of people again grouped into two categories: passive people who shakes hands with reality and active people who have intentions to change reality in favor of his/her pace. Comparative forms are characterized by between positive (social) characters who have tolerances for family members' wrong-doings and negative (isolated) characters who are rejected from the society and lost his/her identity in lack of respect and love for others due to his/her selfishness.
      Third, while Lee criticizes the contradictions of 1930s' colonial policy in various ways after correctly understanding the subjects of the criticism, he overcome the crisis of the times by making children experience the reality and providing solutions.
      The author uses the spirit of the times to show protest against contradictions and violations at the time of 1950s when the country was devastated and children's minds were hurt. One can see ordinary people's protest in their daily life. Since 1960s and 1970s when isolation among people was increased due to industrialization and economic growth, and when people's minds were ruined because foreign civilization based on materialism flowed into the country, the author emphasizes on ethical identity by criticizing the reality through the characters in the tales.
      Finally, the characters in Lee's novel were analyzed.
      First, the author focuses on the good. It was the subject with which the author dealt for a life-long period, suggesting that underlying the author's literature was the value of true life.
      Second, the author wanted to illustrate ordinary people's life. What the author really wanted to show through innocent children was the spirits of independence and equity.
      Third, the characters are illustrated in terms of nostalgia. underlying it is realism.
      Fourth, Lee's novels can be characterized by the characters' introversion. Author's ultimate purposes for illustrating positive and innocent characters was emerged by the character's behaviors in the name of relief of humanism.
      Based on above, it can be concluded that the characteristics of the characters in Lee's tales are related to the good, the love for ordinary people, and criticism against contradictions and violations.
