The purpose of the study was to measure the degree of difficulty and gratification of the transition to parenthood. Reviewing literature and empirical research were conducted for this purpose.
Scales for the degree of difficulty and gratification of the transition to parenthood, baby's temperament, the degree of marital accord, father's participation in housework and the degree of the couple's anticipatory Socialization for parenthood were developed.
Data from a non-probability sample of married couples, living in Seoul who had their first child aged under 1 year old (116 couples) were collected by interview & questionaire method.
The data were analized by statistical procedures such as factor analyses, t-test, F-test, pearson's product correlation and stepwise regression analyses.
The main results were as follow:
1. Couples reported great amounts of gratification in adjusting to the birth of their first child.
2. Both parents perceived moderate amounts of difficulty in adjusting to the first child with mothers reporting significantly greater amounts of difficulty than did fathers.
3. The degree of the couples difficulty and gratification of the transition to parenthood were not influenced by social class differences.
4. The age of the parent, the degree of the father's participation in housework, the degree of marital accord, and the temperament of the baby were negatively related to the degree of difficulties, while the degree of couples' Anticipatory. Socialization of th e parenthood was positively associated with it.
The degree of gratification was significantly related to the degree of marital accord.
5. The difficulty of the father's transition to parenthood was affected by the marital accord and the baby's experience of the hospitalization.
However, mothers were affected by the degree of the marital accord, the degree of the Anticipatory Socialization for parenthood and baby's temperement.
6. Those factors which influenced on the degree of the difficulties had the differentiating effect on the extent of various subdimensions of the difficulty in the transition to parenthood.
Overall, the finding suggested that the degree of marital accord and the degree of anticipatory socialization had strong influences on the Transition to parenthood.
Becoming a parent was found to be an important transition especially for mothers creating major changes and adjustments. Realistic expectation and anticipatory Socialization about the nature of the parenthood and childrearing were suggested for parent-to-be.
