In the study, we examine what differences junior college students show in adapting to their college lives by individual background, by home background and by type of admission and we analyze the factors which affect their college to understand deeply their college lives and to provide comprehensive resource to manage their lives better.
For this, questionnaire research was executed for 540 students who go to three junior colleges located in Seoul.
Student Adaptation to College Questionnaire(SACQ), which was made by Baker and Siryk(1984) and translated by Eun-hee Jung(1993), was used to assess the students' adaptation to their college lives. A researcher made up question items to measure variables of individual background, home background and type of admission. SPSSWIN 10.0 program was used to assess the collected data and besides, frequency analysis, one-way ANOVA Analysis, T-test, Reliability test and multiple regression analysis were used. All analyses were performed at significance level below p<.1, p<.05, p<.0l and p<.00l, respectively.
The research results are as follows.
First, according to a variable of individual background, students made a difference in adapting to their college lives. Male students adapted to the college life better than female students, students below 23 year old better than under 23 year old, students receiving good grades better than students receiving bad grades, and students with military experience better than students without it. In a case of social adaption, students below 23 adapted to the college life better than students under 23. In a case of individual-emotional adaption, male students adapted to the college life better than female students, students below 23 better than students under 23, students who had experienced stopout periods better than students who didn't have experienced them, and students with military experience better than students without it. In a case of general adaption, male students adapted to the college life better than female students, students below 23 year old better than under 23 year old, students receiving good grades better than students receiving bad grades, and students with military experience better than students without it. In a case of total adaption, male students adapted to the college life better than female students, students below 23 year old better than under 23 year old, students receiving good grades better than students receiving bad grades, and students with military experience better than students without it.
Second, according to a variable of home background, students showed a difference in adapting to their college lives. Students whose fathers were production or manual workers adapted to the college life better than students whose fathers had other jobs. In a case of social adaption, they didn't show significant difference. In a case of individual-emotional adaption, students whose mother were sellers or service workers adapted better than students whose mother had other jobs. In a case of general and total adaption, the students whose fathers were production or manual workers adapted to the college life better than the students whose fathers had other jobs.
Third, according to a variable of a type of admission, students showed a significant difference in adapting to their college lives. In a case of social adaption, day students adapted to the college life better than night students. Other students adapted to the college life better than students based on the same course, students having technical certificate and students who used to be industrial workers. In a case of individual-emotional adaption, students who had taken humanities course adapted to the college life better than students who had taken vocational course, night students better than day students, students of a general type of admission better than of a special type of admission and students of a general type of admission better than other students except students based on the same course and students having technical certificate, or students who used to be industrial workers. In a case of general adaption, students who had taken vocational course adapted to the college life better than students who had taken humanities course, night students better than day students, students of special admission type better than students of general admission type, students who used to be industrial workers better than other students except students of general admission type, students based on the same course and students having technical certificate. In a case of the total adaption, they showed no significant difference according to a variable of admission type. Fourth, we examined the effects which affected the students in adapting to their college lives. The result showed that the factors were age, credit, whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, their fathers' occupation and academic background, their mothers' occupation and school system. They had statistically significant effect on academic adaption. The subjects were classified into three categories of total students, male students and female students. They showed a little difference. Credit had positive effect on the three categories. Age had positive effect on the total and female students. School system had an effect on the three. While their fathers' occupation had positive effect just on male students, whether they had taken a leave of absence or not and their mothers' occupation had an effect just on female students. The factors which affected their social adaption were age, whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, their fathers' occupation, their high schools which they graduated from, a type of admission. It was verified that they had statistically significant effect on social adaption. Age had an effect on the total students and on female students. Whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, their fathers' occupation and their high schools which they graduated from had an effect just on female students. Fathers' occupation had an effect just on male students.
The factors which affected on their individual-emotional adaption were age, credit, whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, their fathers' and mothers' academic background and a type of admission. They showed statistically a significant difference in their individual-emotional adaption. Age had an effect on the total students and on female students. Credit had an effect on the total students and male students. Whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, their fathers' and mothers' academic background just on female students. A type of admission had an effect on the total students and on male students.
The factors which affected general adaption were age, credit, whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, their mother's academic background, their residential district, school system and the high school which they graduated from, which showed statistically a significant difference in general adaption. Age, credit and their fathers' occupation affected all of three categories. Whether they had taken a leave of absence or not had an effect on the total students. Their residential districts had an effect on the total and male students. School system had effect on male students. Mothers' occupation had effect on female students.
The factors which affected total adaption were age, credit, whether they had taken a leave of absence or not, fathers' occupation, mothers' academic background and a type of admission, which showed statistically a signifiant difference in the total adaption. Age and a type of admission had an effect on the total and female students. Credit and fathers' occupation had an effect on all three categories. Whether they had taken a leave of absence or not and mothers' academic background had an effect on the female students.
