The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze error patterns made when high school students solve problems of differential and integral calculus, and to search for teaching strategies appropriate for a level of the students' cognition when teachers instruct that contents.
The research questions for this study are as follows;
First, what patterns of errors are made when students solve problems of differential and integral calculus?
Second, what is the best effective teaching strategies for avoiding these errors?
This study was conducted with 30 advanced level students and 30 basic level students drawn out arbitrarily by computer-used random number from 45 advanced level students and 66 basic level students, who were chosen from 4 classes(180 students) of total 12 classes of the second grade students in D high school located in Daegu city.
The test was composed of 10 subjective items, that are most likely to cause errors (5 items from differential calculus and 5 items from integral calculus). To obtain objective and valid results, these test items were verified by 3 mathematics teachers from Daegu Middle & High School Mathematics Education Research Society and 2 mathematics educators from a university.
Error measurement was taken of the causes of wrong answers such as misused materials, mistakenly interpreted language, logically inappropriate reasoning, misinterpreted theorem or definition, unwanted answer, technical error, ellipsis of solving process, and ambiguity of error, appeared in problem solving process. And the causes were analyzed according to each item and the ability of advanced and basic level students groups, and the frequency was measured.
This study classified error patterns made in problem solving process of differential and integral calculus according to students' ability and found the following conclusions.
First, the students in the advanced group made the most errors in technical error, misused material, and misinterpreted theorem and definition, and the causes were to lose and not to consider important concepts included in problems in many cases, and to misuse information given in problems and to calculate mistakenly in some cases.
Second, the students in the basic group made many errors not to answer at all and to misinterpret theorems or definitions because students didn't understand theorems or definitions accurately, or they lacked of the ability to put their own knowledge to practical use.
Third, the followings are the causes of errors surveyed by analyzing the diagnostic problem solving process and interviewing the students.
(1) They were afraid of mathematics itself.
(2) They were not accustomed to the definition of a new term.
(3) They were not accustomed to the usage of a symbol.
(4) They lacked of the ability of application because they tried to memorize rather than to understand the problem.
(5) They disliked to think logically because they lacked of the ability to concentrate.
(6) They miscalculated the simple problem because they lacked of the ability to calculate.
This study suggests the followings to minimize these errors made by the students.
First, sufficient concept learning and the instruction of an application must be emphasized because they have difficulty in applying it to problem solving, unless they understand or memorize mathematical theorems and definitions.
Second, errors can be minimized by researching enough the parts of each chapter that students are likely to make errors and by utilizing counterexamples in teaching mathematics.
Third, teachers will have to instruct students not to make the same errors by making sure to analyze the errors after all kinds of examinations and announcing the results to students.
