This research collected the data from 1224 students, including 596 athletes ( 375 boys and 221 girls ) and 628 non-athletes ( 396 boys and 232 girls ) of Middle and High School in Kyounggi Province, and investigated the degree of their drug abusing about 14 kinds of drugs, the experience of their misconducts, and the actual conditions of the athletes' drug abusing for the better athletic performance.
The result of this research is as follows :
1. In the degree of drug-abusing, the athletes had more experiences of abusing drugs than the non-athletes. In boy students' case, the drug-abusing rate of the athletes is higher than that of the non-athletes for most drugs except stimulants and gas. Also, the drug-abusing rate of the girl athletes was higher than that of general students (non-athletes) except the case of using stimulants. For stimulants, general students misuse a lot. As a whole, the boy students had the higher rate of the experience like smoking, drinking, and inhaling bonds and gas, while the girl students had the higher rate of misusing drugs such as antitussives, hypnotics, analgesics and tranquilizers. Most students generally had the first experience of drug-abusing when they were between 15 and 16 years old.
2. In the experience of misconducts, the athletes had more experiences of being absent from school, leaving home, engaging in sexual relations with the other sex, watching lewd videos, and drinking liquors than the non-athletes. But in case of carrying knives, the rate of non-athletes' carrying knives is higher than that of the athletes. Especially 42.3% of middle school students and 54.5% of high school students had an experience of watching lewd videos.
3. In the actual conditions of drug-abusing of the athletes who want to do the better athletic performance, the drug-abusing rate of the girl athletes (20.4%) was higher than that of the boy athletes(18.1%). Also the athletes of individual competition that try to set the better record misused drugs more than team players. Especially for the reason of abusing drugs, 16.2% of boy and 15.6% of girl athletes responded that they started to misuse drugs by the recommendation of their manager or their coach.
