The current musical world was established in modern era. In Korean music history, it is the early 20th century that the modernization progressed. This thesis aims at clarifying the modernization process in traditional music world through the formation of folk music circle in that period.
This thesis deals with the first forty years of the twentieth century, which has been generally ignored in the research of modern Korean music history. During the early twentieth century, even though the traditional music repertories were kept unchanged, the activities of other musicians, the music circulation system, and the system of the folk music circle varied. The changes were most prominent during the first forty years, and after that period the current form of folk music circles was established. Thus, it could be said that research of the first forty years of the twentieth century is related with the study of the modern Korean music history. In particular, since the changes mainly occurred in the folk music part, this thesis aims at investigating the formation of the folk music circle in the early twentieth century.
This thesis explains the changes in the music circle of Seoul, which accepted much of the changes during the early twentieth century. Chapter one deals with the musical system of the nineteenth century, and chapter two describes the fall of the musical system of the nineteenth century and the formational process of the basis for the establishment of the current folk music circle. In the third chapter, the formational process of the detailed structure of the folk music circle is investigated.
Although most of the musical pieces of the nineteenth century were also performed in the twentieth century, the music groups of the nineteenth century dissolved and even if groups were maintained, the characteristics of the musicians or the music circulation system changed. In the twentieth century, the social status of the musicians was equal and the activities and repertories of the musicians were decided by competitive situation.
During the first thirty years, the activities of the male and female musicians were differentiated. The male musicians retained the musical system of the nineteenth century whereas the female musicians performed within a music system different from the traditional one. Moreover, although male and female musicians legally had an equal status, the male musicians were older than the female musicians and assumed the role of leaders by teaching and taking administrative positions in music groups.
Because of the development of the theaters and musical recordings in the twentieth century, changes occurred in music circulation. In this period, the masses regardless of social status enjoyed the same music. The theaters and recordings played a great influence on the distribution of musicians and the music repertories. Thus, in the 1900s, Seoul music of Samp'ae 三牌and the music of the Kwangdae 廣大of the three southern provinces were the main repertories; after the 1910s when the female musicians of the regional area moved to Seoul, the chapkas 雜歌 of every regions were added to the repertories of Seoul. Seoul was the central stage in the first thirty years of the twentieth century since various musicians and repertories existed and the musical circulation system was well developed compared to other cities.
The musicians and repertories of Seoul were categorized into Seoul, so˘do 西道, and south of Han river. The existence of these various musical styles and musicians in Seoul formed the basis for the establishment of the current folk music circle.
In the 1920s, however, the situations of the musicians and the music circulation changed. Musicians of young and new generation emerged, and the music recording industry and the theaters became less interested in Korean traditional music. In this period, the status of a few female musicians rose to be equal to that of the male musicians. Moreover, the increasing popularity of popular music and the development of Western music in Korea after the 1930s reduced the activity of the traditional music that was popular for the first thirty years of the twentieth century.
The folk music circle formed professional groups in the 1920s in order to deal with the historical changes, but the only two successful groups were the Choso˘n so˘ngak yo˘n'guhoe 朝鮮聲樂硏究會and the Kamu yo˘n'guhoe 歌舞硏究會established in the early 1930s. The main members of the Choso˘n So˘ngak Yo˘n'guhoe were male musicians of the south Cho˘lla province and successful female musicians; the repertories included vocal and instrumental pieces of the southern area. The main members of the Kamu yo˘n'guhoe were male musicians in Seoul and their repertories included kyo˘ngso˘do chapka These two organizations included most of the repertories popular in Seoul and many first-class musicians. Also, since the organizations were deeply engaged with interaction with professional musicians, teaching music, and performances, they were the mainstream of the folk music circle.
However, they did not embrace the male musicians of so˘do region and a lot of female musicians.
Therefore, the folk music circle became systemized in the 1930s and the distinction between namdo 南道regional music and kyo˘ngso˘do 京西道music became clear. The establishment of the system of the folk music circle similar to that of today, thus, took place in the 1930s when the two music organizations were systemized.
In summary, the first forty years of the twentieth century was a transformational period which changed the folk music performance practice of the nineteenth century to that of the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, musicians competed against one another on an equal social status, and the fact that a majority of the urbanites appreciated similar music through the theaters and music recordings is modern. Thus, to understand the historical aspect of folk music is to learn the modernity of Korean music.
Through the understanding of the formation of the folk music circle, it is certain that the traditional music circle greatly contributed to the creation of modern music society. This thesis may make a contribution to modifying the trend of examining modern Korean music history only in terms of the growth Western music in Korea. The author expects that the dichotomy that Western music is modern and traditional music is premodern will fade.
