The purpose of this study is to investigate the differences of mother's developmental expctation according to the birth order of children. For this research, 3 classes in 5 private Kindergartens and 5 Semaul Nursery Schools in Seoul were selected randomly, and 458 mothers of children in these classes were served as the subject of this survey. There were 458 mothers which included 189 mothers of fist born child, 176 mothers of last child, and 93 mothers of only child.
The Developmental Expectation Questionaire designed by Hess and Azuma was rivised by the researcher and distributed to mothers in order to find out mother's expectations. The differences of mother's expectations according to the birth order were analyzed by t or F-test accordingly.
The results of this study is as follows:
1. According to the birth order of children, there is no significant differences of mother's developmental expectation in relation to politeness.
2. According to the birth order of children, there is no significant differences of mother's developmental expectation in relation to compliance.
3. According to the birth order of children, there is no significant differences of mother's developmental expectation in relation to emotional maturity.
4. According to the birth order of children, these is significant differences of verbal assertiveness. (p=.01) Mother's expectation are higher for the first born than last born child.
5. According to birth order of children, these is significant differences of mother's expectation in relation to school related skills. (p=.03) Therefore, mother development expectation in Relation to independence.
6. According to birth order of children, There is no significant differences of mother's developmental expectation in relation to indipendence.
7. According to birth order of children, There is no significant differences of mother's developmental expectation in relation to social skills.
