The purpose of this study was to examine the career awareness of students who had finished regular high school courses and the realities of general high school career education in a bid to find out what problems there were and suggest some of the right direction for high school career education.
The samples in this study were 600 freshmen from four universities and two junior colleges who had graduated from a general high school in Seoul and Gyeonggi province. After questionnaires were distributed, the responses from 510 students were gathered, with the response rate of 85 percent, and 492 questionnaires were selected for analysis. The 28-item questionnaires were developed by this researcher with the assistance of a specialist, after earlier studies and the literature concerned were reviewed, regarding five areas; career choice satisfaction level, career choice process/career awareness, career education, and career education reform measures.
The collected data were analyzed with SPSS. To find out the actual status of general high school career education and how it's viewed by the students by gender, academic field and school, frequency and percentage rate were calculated, and x^2(Chi-square) test, t-test and one-way ANOVA were applied.
The findings of this study were as follow:
First, more than half of the students investigated expressed satisfaction at their own career choice, but they found it difficult to make that choice mostly because they weren't convinced of their aptitude or interest. To help students make the right choice, it's needed to implement all kinds of psychological test to get fundamental information on their aptitude and interest, and career guidance should be provided on that base. As the largest route for them to obtain career information was the computer, a more extended information network should be built to supply a wider variety of related information, and students should have more opportunities for field trip and on-the-spot study.
Second, their parents exercised the greatest influence on their career choice, and teachers are requested to make more active efforts to offer better career guidance. To make career education more successful, there should be frequent communication between teachers and parents, and parents and students should be aware of the importance of career guidance in school education.
Third, most of the students didn't receive proper career education, and many didn't have a chance to discuss on career choice with school counselors. A specific career-education course should be offered to put that education on the right track, and school career counselors should be secured for successful career counseling.
Fourth, the students were not aware of their own career-related characteristics, and failed to utilize psychological test results for a rational career choice. There is an urgent need to find a way to help students have the right understanding of their own aptitude and talent, and various kinds of programs should be developed.
Fifth, current high school career guidance focuses only on academic records. But the aptitude and interest of students should primarily be taken into consideration, and career education should be more than a mere effort to make students enter university or find a job. It needs to have its sights set on facilitating the development of individual students. In addition, subject-related information exploration should be done in a more active manner since academic activities gave the biggest impact on career choice.
Sixth, it's found that high school needed to offer a career education course and is in want of counselors. More reinforced, extended in service education and training opportunities should be provided for teachers to enhance career education.
