The fraction that is alternative expression of rational number is one of the most complicated and important concept in elementary mathematics. Its importance can be described by three backgrounds as following:practical ground that the ability to deal with the concepts of fractions effectively can substantially improve the ability of children to understand and deal with the situations and problems in a real life, psychological ground to provide resourceful areas as developing and expanding intellectual structure required for continuous intellectual development of children, and mathematical ground that understanding fraction can provide the base for primary algebra operation.
The operations of fractions with difference denominator in the grade 5, especially their addition and subtraction, are the most complicated subject and they can confuse the students. Therefore, this study aims to provide the appropriate suggestions for the instruction on fraction by analyzing the common errors of students in the addition and subtraction as focusing on the students in the grade 5 and clarifying the relationship between the preveious learning factors and errors.
This study will consider the procedure to form the concept of fraction as the reasons of errors and relate the reasons for each error to the previous learning factors for the addition and subtraction operation of fraction with difference denominators by analyzing students' reactions on the test papers constructed on the basis of the concept structure of fraction and curriculum. This study analyzed the errors shown in the addition and subtraction procedures of fractions with difference denominators, assumed that the reasons of these errors were lack of previous learning factors according to a hierarchical structure, and identified the relationship between the types of errors and the previous learning factors.
The types of errors were analyzed on the basis of diverse previous studies and classified as follows:errors that the reducation to common denominators was not properly made, errors adding(subtracting) by denominator and numerator without reduction to common denominator, errors adding(subtracting) numerators without change after reduction to common denominator, errors misunderstanding addition(subtraction) as multiplication, errors by no round-off(carry) and errors that did not make the calculated fractions to simple fractions or mixed fractions. This study was concluded as follows.
A. The errors of students in the addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators were caused from the previous learning. Therefore, it is necessary to diagnose the reasons and instruct on the basis of the hierarchical structure when teaching those students.
B. Most children added or subtracted by denominator or by numerator without reduction to common denominator. In addition, there were many children who did not properly understand the reduction to common denominator even though they understood the necessity of the reduction to common denominator. So it is necessary to ensure the necessity and concept of reduction of a fraction and reduction to common denominator and then to teach the addition and subtraction of fractions with different denominators.
C. It was apt to make errors more in subtraction than in addition. Some children did the reduction of a fraction and then added. It is required to teach to make students fully understand the operation in the classes for fractions.
D. Some children did not express the calculation results in the simple reductions nor improper fractions in the mixed fractions. It is required to teach as emphasizing the proper expression of the results.
E. The reduction to common denominator in the addition and subtraction of fractions with difference denominators, addition and subtraction of fractions with same denominators requiring carry or round-off, fractions with discrete values-it shall be taught on the basis of understanding these there factors.
