The purpose of this study is to examine the effects of bibliotherapy in establishing the ego-identity of university students whose ego-identity develops most greatly during the university days. First, this study will verify the effects of biblotherapy in developing the ego-identity of university students. Secondly, this study will verify the necessity of reading guidance as one of the active reference services of the university library.
The sample consisted of 28 university students. Half of them was an experimental group and the other half was a control group. The 'developmental stage scale' and the 'component factor scale' developed by Kim Hyung-Tae were used as a measurement. 10 books were selected for the experiment of bibliotherapy. The period of experiment was 10 weeks and 90 to 120 minutes were used in the experiment done once a week for every week. In practice, the experimental group was divided into 2 groups and treated with biblotherapy. The control group had no biblotherapy treatment. Two sample t-tests were used to find the differences between the experimental group and the control group before the biblotherapy was used. The analysis of covariance(ANOCOVA) which analyzes just the genuine differences between groupes and the paired t-tests which analyze personal differences were used for analyzing the result data. A computer software SAS 8.0 was used as a statistical program.
The results are:1) the first hypothesis that experimental group will have higher scores than the control group in the ego-identity scale test after the bibliotherapy threatment, was verified by the meaningful results in such items as trust, autonomy, initiative, identity, stability, goal-directedness, interpersonal role expectation and self-acceptance progress 2)the second hypothesis that there will be some differences beween the sexes in the score of the post test after the bibliotherapy treatment, was not verified by resulting in no notable differences in any items of the 'developmental stage scale' except in goal-directedness, and bibliotherapy helps university students to establish their ego-identity 2) The university library may be a cooperator for students as it provides good books through the bibliotherapy treatment 3)The bibliotherapy may be a good reference service as one of the library services. Librarians may help library users to cope with reading problems, reading habits and psychological troubles and moreover to shape their course in life.
